NEW: Egg producers suspect bird flu is traveling through the air. The USDA didn’t test the theory after a disastrous Midwestern outbreak.

Here’s how we did.

How ProPublica Investigated a Bird Flu Outbreak in America’s Heartland
Early this year, bird flu ripped through 80 farms in Ohio and Indiana. Using genetic markers, wind simulations, satellite imagery, property records and more, we found that the virus could’ve been airb...

After bird flu exploded and drove up egg prices, USDA refused to investigate if it was airborne, despite the urging of industry leaders.

So @natlash.bsky.social investigated. He analyzed the virus’s genetics, and what he found is urgent — yes, bird flu is back www.propublica.org/article/bird...

NEW: We traced out a devastating outbreak of bird flu to its source: an egg farm in Ohio. Where the wind blew, the virus followed.

Within weeks, the farms downwind were about 20 times as likely to see outbreaks as those that weren’t.

The policy says reporters cannot obtain or solicit any information the Defense Department does not explicitly authorize.

Media members that don't sign the policy by its deadline have 24 hours to turn in their media credentials and clear out of Pentagon facilities.

The value of local journalism: Last year, a plan was afoot to build golf courses and pickleball courts in state parks. Florida residents loudly objected -- as they had a decade ago when a similar proposal was rejected. It was reporting from the @tampabaytimes.bsky.social that exposed the plan. (1/2)
