solidarity with all colleagues and students at Nottingham who are having their jobs and degrees destroyed by management. the relentless annihilation of language provision in UKHE is something that *every* academic should be calling out and pushing back against.
I am hearing that @uniofnottingham.bsky.social is suspending (i.e shutting down) *all modern language courses* in 2026-27. One of the largest departments in the UK. A shocking short sighted move that damages regional and national prospects @britishacademy.bsky.social @hetanshah.bsky.social

As an experienced structured #WritingRetreat facilitator-participant, I can (and often do!) give you a long list of writerly benefits.

But it can be just as useful—and sometimes more impactful—to hear what my writer-participants say about the experience.

I love myNoise—it's my top site for focus (I'm easily distracted).

It has a variety of stunning soundscapes and the listening experience can be customized in loads of ways.

Stéphane is a master of sound; his site is a labor of love—no enshittifying is afoot here. I'm a happy patron. 😊

Oh wow, as someone who dwells on the opposite side of the peninsula (and clearly doesn't travel much to points south), I had no idea these mergers where happening in various parts of Andalusia.

More reason to head south and visit friends in Málaga ASAP.

Saddened to hear the news of David Bellos’ passing. He was one of our keynotes last year at #METM24. Glad I had the opportunity to meet him.
RIP to David Bellos whose book Is That a Fish in Your Ear?: Translation and the Meaning of Everything massively contributed to me wanting to become a literary translator. When I was writing my own book about translation, I kept in mind how funny and accessible his book was.

Fall is my favorite time of year. I’m trying to walk around Donostia as much as I can before it’s too wet, windy or dark.

Caught this lovely bit of afternoon light while walking through a park on my way home yesterday.

In social writing environments like facilitated writing retreats, it's easier to resurface "forgotten" lessons about the tensions inherent in writing.

I wrote about two recent lessons:

If only there'd been some way to predict this... Sigh.

On a slightly less sarcastic note, this is why many editors ask if AI has been used in writing – because a lot of editing is taking LONGER if it's AI text rather than human text. Not always, obviously – but often.
