Fun fact: there is a Swedish verb "parera", simply to ward off, often heard in fencing.
erikhansson.bsky.social
I need to correct myself: parasoll is the Swedish spelling.
erikhansson.bsky.social
Apparently there are thousands of them. Let me just tell you about fåtölj, trottoar, portfölj, garderob, salong...
erikhansson.bsky.social
Yes, you're on the right track. My wild guess is built on Latin "parare" (to fight, to stop), similar to "par à sol" (par à soleil) that finally developed into Swedish parasol.

Swedish word of the day #swotd is paraply (umbrella), from French parapluie. There are plenty of French loanwords as French was a status marker for the Swedish elite especially during the 18th century, often in areas such as culture, fashion, and food.
