Something a lot of folks seem blind to: having a debate or "engaging with" or having a conversation or anything else where you have no intent whatsoever to internalize and reflect on what is said by the other party is NONE of those things. It's lecturing, just a performance with a human prop.

I don't think it's simpering praise. He was an interesting man. I didn't agree with much that he said, but he was interesting and he was growing, and his death is a significant loss for those who believe engagement can help bridge disagreements.

there's a weird feedback loop where the media's reaction to kirk's death pushes you to speak more ill of the dead than you otherwise would because it's the only reasonable response to the simpering praise they're heaping on him
