I happened upon this yesterday, and I keep looking at it. 13th-century Flemish manuscript. I really want to know the context that inspired the illuminator to make this particular marginal drollery.

As for so much about this regime - if it weren’t so tragic and terrifying it would be hilarious.

AND WHAT IS WITH THE ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME?

I have been a guest on @vulgarhistory.bsky.social twice and I love my conversations with Ann Foster. This one was about a particular hero of mine, Olympe de Gouges - a radical feminist of 18th-century France.

How do they not understand that to vote “no” is a way of saying “we don’t trust this regime no matter how ‘reasonable’ your candidate seems, and we are not going along with this?” A regime that pulled Bondi et al is not a regime to be trusted. As for Fetterman, I think that’s a bait and switch.

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

That’s interesting. And also, presumably, the social conditions that led to the wet nurses’s poor health, indeed the impoverished conditions that likely led her to having milk at all as a wet nurse (perhaps because her own child had died?) were also rarely considered.

Did you know?

In the Victorian era, wealthy mothers often hired wet nurses to breastfeed their babies.

However, the health of the wet nurse was rarely considered, which, unfortunately, led to some infants contracting diseases such as tuberculosis and syphilis.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

On Substack, I wrote about the latest proclamation recognizing Women's History Month. It's alarming to see the shifts over the years. This administration is focused on the future in frightening ways. Not surprising, perhaps, but the language is revealing.
