Turn off your Face ID and Touch ID if you are taking your phones to the protests. Keep it in airplane mode and use encrypted apps where possible. Protect yourself.

19) Stay out of panic mode: Prioritize being calm at all times. If things go bad, walk when you can. Running in these situations increases your heart rate and discourages clear thinking. Take a breath. Step back for a second. Wait until you are ready.

20) Stop when it feels right to stop.

now and historical reasons later. You are telling a story about the country and your community. Archivists and historians and kids doing history projects will look at these one day.

17) Listen to the chants and see if you can find a sign saying that.

18) Capture some fun signs too.

9/
15) Ask for help: The organizers want journos there. It is the whole damned point. If you need something, like water or directions or an idea of events for the day - ask.

16) Get geographic markers in some your photos to show WHERE the photo was taken. This is important for solidarity reasons

when there is violence.

#nokings should be peaceful so don't fear. Just decide ahead of time if you want to stay to photo that.

13) Memorize your emergency phone numbers in case you are arrested or write them on sharpie on your body somewhere.

14) Wear hidden pockets for your data cards

7/
not give you a new sanitary device for hours after processing. You can go into #toxicshock

11) Prepare for it to go bad if you plan to stay if it does. You need eye, lung, head, and water protection. Get protection for your equipment.

12) Take photos of the cops: Cops often start the violence
6/
9) Vests work: Yeah, you can wear a backpack and stop every time you need something, or you can just wear a vest. It is a classic for a reason.

10) If you are a #woman on her #period: Consider a #pad instead of #tampon. If you are arrested the processing can take several hours and they might

5/
6) Do not walk with your eye in the camera: Not only is this a tripping hazard, you do not see photo opportunities if you are only looking through the narrow camera.

7) Be cautious of cops and counter protestors: Learn your rights ahead of time.

8) Care for yourself: Wear comfy shoes...

4/
Shooting a protest up from the ground creates images of power.

4) Get into the crowd: Pictures from the outside are pictures of the sides of faces.

5) Get in front of the crowd: Signs and makeup of the crowd tell the community what is wrong and why people came out.

3/
allowed to get your drone up, get it up throughout the event.

If you don't have a #drone, stand on any divider wall, a box, your car, a friend's shoulders, anything. Don't be afraid to ask or visit a nearby building and photo down from a higher story.

3) Shoot up from as low as possible:

Tips for protest #photography:

1) Catch the mood: If it is joyful, get the joyful stuff. If it is angry, get the angry stuff

2) Get up as high as you can: the size of a #protest is an important piece of information. The #FAA will have a lot of flight restrictions today but if you are
#nokings
