To be clear, I was referring to our heroic work in abolishing the slave trade once it had paid for the wonderful architecture of Bristol and Liverpool and then become strangely unpopular. Caron was a great man who brought tremendous success and fame to his home.

The parents should get better jobs.

A thing which often gets ignored in these interminable discussions around child benefit caps - a lot of your money could be saved by being a little more selective about who receives this largesse. Children born of mixed race couples, feckless single mothers or gays should not receive your support.

So much to criticise in this “budget”. I see that most people will be affected by the envy tax on decent-sized homes. Literally no one I know owns a house worth less than £3m, and I would suggest that these are the sort of normal, modest English citizens that should be protected not persecuted.
