One thing to remember about red states is that they have a different internal calculus than we do.

They only care about the education, crime, and welfare statistics in zip codes where the white people live.

Words matter.

In the 1970s, after Jaws (1975) came out, a 12-year-old boy named Hunter Scott watched the famous scene where Quint recounts the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Curious whether the story was real, Scott began researching it for a school history project in Pensacola, Florida.

As he dug deeper, he discovered that Captain Charles B. McVay III had been court-martialed and blamed for the disaster—even though evidence and survivor testimony showed it was unfair. Scott interviewed dozens of survivors, reviewed official Navy records, and compiled a compelling case showing that McVay had been scapegoated.

His project gained national attention in the 1990s. He later testified before Congress in 1998 alongside Indianapolis survivors, presenting his research and arguing for McVay’s exoneration. In 2000, largely as a result of that effort, Congress passed a resolution clearing Captain McVay’s name, and President Bill Clinton signed it into law.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.
