The queer concept of family doesn't have to abide by blood/adoption/legal relations. The people we grew up with don't get to be part of our families just because they are relatives.

They have to accept, support, and value us like any true family member. If they won't do that, they're not family.

My mother wasn't a terror, but she held political beliefs, and directly contributed to, my queer family's oppression.

After 20 years, to the day, of trying to enlighten, I gave up and cut all contact late last year. My true family comes first, and she doesn't want to be part of it.

This thread was about the fact that it's "Columbus Day" in the US. Any "oh it was later worse" reply-guy response inherently diminishes the whole point of "Columbus was bad man."

As always, I highly recommend the book "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by respected historian James W. Loewen, which goes into detail about the truth of a lot of things that were propagandized in US history. Columbus himself has a whole chapter.

Fascist in the modern notion of that word, no, but definitely imperialist which bears a lot of the same hallmarks. Pol-sci subtlety is lost on a lot of people though.
