In this episode, I go meat shopping with @mikegrunwald.bsky.social, sample cattle feed, and confront some hard questions about what's really "best" for the planet. Maybe my favorite one yet!

The Land Problem
We need to make more food with less land. Could factory farms be the key?

I’m glad you did that. It’s supposed to be optional unless something has changed. I opted out several times over the last few weeks with no issues.
Wow…. That’s concerning to hear. Are you going to report it?

Had an absolute blast on the Make Me Smart @marketplace.org podcast with @kimberlyadams.bsky.social.

We recorded the show at The Royale (which has a fabulous selection of NA drinks).

We discussed MO redistricting, efforts to overturn Amendment 3, the tornado recovery and (gasp) STL stlye pizza:

Congrats to the 2025 Nobel winners in Economics! Their vital message: Progress isn't an accident, it's a choice. Stagnation was the historical norm. To keep our economy growing, we must actively choose openness and innovation over isolation.

Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” hits #1 today in 1983

It was originally “a vampire love song,” said writer Jim Steinman, “for a musical version of ‘Nosferatu’ .. When Bonnie came along, it was the perfect match .. her voice had that haunted, gothic quality .. pleading and defiant ..”

In case you were wondering, U.S. Postal Service remains open during the federal government shutdown because it generally receives no tax dollars to keep running. USPS relies instead on stamp sales and and other service fees
We're doing a shutdown Q&A on our @marketplace.org podcast, "Make Me Smart" tomorrow. If you have questions about the shutdown, how it will affect the economy, its impact on you, the policies they're fighting over, or anything else related... send them our way. www.marketplace.org/shows/make-m...

“Now that President Donald Trump is perverting the Justice Department into an instrument of political persecution, jury nullification may be one of the only mechanisms that everyday Americans have to protect the rule of law,” Adam Serwer argues:
How Ordinary Americans Can Stop Trump’s Revenge Spree
The Founders intended jury nullification to be a tool to resist tyranny.

Three responses I'm hearing a lot of here:
1. "Aha! Any excuse to hide the bad numbers!"
2. "The numbers were cooked anyway so who cares?"
3. "Fine, we'll just rely on private data."
Let's address all three in a 🧵:
Friday's jobs report will provide key evidence on whether slower hiring is turning into deeper weakness in the labor market.
If there is a jobs report on Friday at all.
My story on how a shutdown could leave us flying blind at a vital moment for the economy. #EconSky

The Department of Labor has released its plan in the event of a government shutdown.
Key takeaway for econ data: There will NOT be a jobs report on Friday (or any subsequent data releases) if funding isn't restored in time. #NumbersDay #EconSky

I am a well educated, pretty media literate person whose job it is to be professionally annoying. I cannot figure out if my cancer medication, which costs $17k a month (I do not pay anything thanks to a combo of insurance/access programs), is going to be tariffed 100%.
