This is a great skeet. We should really give it up for @profmusgrave.bsky.social And for everyone else who posts!

Exceedingly clear that for many early Bluesky users, their objection to the police isn’t that they bind one group and protect another, it’s that they merely disagree on which groups to protect and which to bind.

It feels to me that if you define “kinder and gentler” as “harasses people that i think are bad”, you’ve just described a place where your ingroup is more popular. I think expecting your cultural allies/near allies to only harass people who you think “deserve it” is asking for trouble.

On the one hand, the 2010s-era internet is rapidly collapsing (not just Twitter - Google, Facebook, Reddit, etc).

OTOH, can anyone truly say that the last decade of the internet was an altogether successful experiment?

Tbh the biggest reason BlueSky needs more clusters of users is because the backpatting viral posts about how BlueSky is the best site ever are extremely annoying.

I can think of at least one person on BlueSky who is going to be very upset by this news https://edition.cnn.com/2023/05/05/health/who-ends-covid-health-emergency/index.html
WHO says Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency | CNN
Covid-19 is no longer a global health emergency, the World Health Organization said on Friday.

Twitter is interesting because it was a case study in maximum connectivity. Twitter was all about building Bridges, with very few ways of effectively disconnecting.

I think the better visual metaphor for the ideal social media site is the drawbridge: a thing that can *both* connect, *and* protect
I don’t disagree, but I think guardrails between communities that constantly fight are good if we want to reduce toxicity. It’s good for engagement, but it’s not good for civility that the 5 largest NIMBY/YIMBY accounts spend all day attacking each other.

Ironic that I’m doing it here - I feel like the worst element of Twitter in terms of rewarding bad behavior is the Quote Tweet system encouraging dunks. It does have uses - like here - but I think a system where an OP has to approve any QT would dramatically reduce “dunks” as a way to gain clout.
Status-seeking is just sort of built-in to social media. The real question for the long-term viability of this website is: are the ways that you gain status here fundamentally different than the ways you gain status on Twitter?

I’ve unlocked the Block button and am trigger happy to try it out. Like a poacher on the Savannah, I have to find the worst skeet on this website

The best case scenario for Bluesky is honestly just, “Twitter as of 2021”. The non-Musk problems of Twitter - ambiguous moderation, drive by hate-mobs, feuding social groups - are endemic to the porous and person-first (rather than topic-first) structure of the platform.

Tbh learning there isn’t a block button is the most compelling reason to not use Bluesky. Many people are plainly not interesting to engage with!
