🌈 It’s been fascinating to see which ideas from Rainbow Trap *stick* with readers – and the idea of box breakers has been one of those sticky ideas!

Read my two letters to the #UK:
1. Protests: I call for a review of the legal framework and the reconsideration of provisions in the Crime & Policing Bill that could restrict freedom of assembly.
2. Trans people: I warn against exclusion&zero-sum approaches

In today’s episode of #FixTheForms, meet the Box Breakers from @kevinguyan.bsky.social

If you have ever found the answer options of a form are all wrong for you, you too are a Box Breaker.

Pro tip for why people lie of forms: “Wrong answers only” - very common.

When designing data projects, start with the box breakers.

Putting them first reveals the effects of classifications – determining what is possible and impossible, determining who is possible and impossible.

2. They disrupt

When forced into a box not of their choosing, box breakers expose how categories of gender, sex and sexuality are all invented.

Box breakers do two things:

1. They resist

When they say ‘no’ to the choices presented, box breakers are not being difficult but challenging the narrow options understood as possible.

Box breakers live outside the narrow demands of gender, sex and sexuality categories.

They are the residue of design practices – the people left behind after everyone else has been organised into neat, tidy boxes.

Again and again, Zack Polanski is cutting through by challenging purposefully misleading and derogatory framing.
Morgan's default when challenged has always been to splutter, mock and deny.
He has no defence against those who won't be intimidated or deflected.

When any pupil goes to school, they should be able to do so safely, have appropriate toilets and changing rooms they can use, and be listened to and have their identity respected.

Brilliant thread from @keyne-unable.bsky.social on why the introduction of digital ID (and the encoding of 'birth sex' in a single government record) has long been an objective of anti-trans campaigners in the UK 👇
keyne-unable.bsky.social
Digital ID is a terrible idea for a lot of reasons: technical, political, economic. Especially with the involvement of far right tech oligarchs and it being explicitly sold as a way of surveilling people so as to imprison or deport immigrants.

But there's a layer which many aren't seeing...

One of the unexpected things I've learned from my advocacy for trans people is how malignant parts of the State can be, how it can misuse data for positively evil purposes. It's taught me people can't be safe with a digital ID card and so I've signed this. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/73...
Petition: Do not introduce Digital ID cards
We demand that the UK Government immediately commits to not introducing a digital ID cards. There are reports that this is being looked at.
