Day 19 of #InsectAdvent

Santa has a sac full of presents, so does Villa cingulata but hers is full of sand. Her sac is at the end of her abdomen & here she is twerking to get the sand to coat her eggs (on exit) to prevent desiccation - cool mum 😎

New #PECBMS update! The Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme gathers data from monitoring schemes across Europe on breeding bird populations.

BTO contributes data through @bbs-birds.bsky.social and the Waterways Breeding Bird Survey.
The Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme has published 2025 update on indices and trends! Unfortunately, it still shows an overall decline in common birds breeding in Europe, with the most pronounced decline among farmland species. Read more about the new update: pecbms.info/what-is-new-...

Decided to walk between Rochester and Chatham railway stations today, essentially along the just-under-a mile that is Limehouse Reach, river #Medway.

Managed to 'tog 5 of the territorial Common Sands along there. (Interesting how at w/ends cross more often to far shore rocks.)

Carcinogenic microplastic that smell like food. 🤔 No wonder wildlife eats 'em..

What are bio-beads used for and how did they get spilled on to Camber Sands beach?
Plastic pellets attract algae and smell like food so can be eaten by birds, fish and dolphins, which can prove fatal

An unexpected outage for iRecord and other Indicia systems this weekend means that you won't be able to add records to the websites. It is still possible to add records to the iRecord apps, but you won't be able to upload them until this is fixed 😞

This is why all us field naturalists do what we do ... species matter, and studying them matters.
Wise words by Sir John Lawton: "There is no surrogate metric that can reliably assess conservation success or failure without knowing what is happening to populations of plants and animals in the landscape."
