In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand

I'll go first: Six page commercial lease.

You can do literally anything other than publishing golly-who-can-say headline and a tight-angle photo that only shows the Feds and omits the calm, not-on-fire city around them!

The media has failed us, not because they’re bad at their job, but because their job isn’t what we’d like to think it is.

“Comparative Calm or ‘Hellscape’? In Portland, Depends on the Narrator”

No, it fucking doesn’t! It literally does not! You can look and see which of those narratives more closely approaches the truth. You can collect facts and build a narrative of your own that reflects reality!
Photo of the Mew York Times national edition for October 11, 2025. Headline: “Comparative Calm or ‘Hellscape’? In Portland, Depends on the Narrator.” Subhead: “Trump and Allies Amplify Influencers Eager to Conform Their Views on City.” Accompanied by a tight-angle photo looking up at Kristi Noem and ICE agents on a roof that shows nothing of the city around them.

It simply should not be possible for the president to repeatedly claim that a major city is burning without a wall of live standups happening in that city clearly demonstrating that it is not

American broadcast journalism has utterly failed and is a dead industry, there's nothing left worth saving

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Realize it’s become a meme at this point, but:

"Do you think God stays in heaven because he, too, lives in fear of what he's created here on earth?"

I agree with both of these assertions. Fortunately, there’s a Gordian knot type of solution readily available.

What do we want?

A producer!

When do we want them?

Did we ever write that down? Where would we even write that down?

I don't know I just memorize them

That makes sense

What were we talking about?

I dunno

Probably not that important then

If only we had someone who knew

As a result of filtering everything that happens in American politics through the lens of “They represent authentic America, we are imposing liberals who need to plead with the Volk,” leadings Dems/libs constantly lend legitimacy to the Right’s claims and sabotage their own response.

Even the ppl I hate are still ppl and I want them to have full rights as such. I also want them to come to a bad end and face consequences for their actions. But I want them to have full rights as ppl the whole time. I want everyone to have that, period full stop.

Hazel, you’ve got to read The Infinite and the Divine. It’s about two old gay robots who love hating each other, complete with the “only one bed so they have to share” trope, except instead of a bed it’s a planet

Fascinating read about the guy who wrote the “first they came for” poem. The poem hides something critical—it’s not actually about indifference. He didn’t speak out because *he actively supported persecuting communists, trade unionists, and Jews!*

just worth reiterating that historically "we need to throw these people under the bus for pragmatic reasons" is often indistinguishable from, "I, personally, do not like these people and want to throw them under the bus." www.everythingishorrible.net/p/martin-nie...

Lightly immunocompromised here, had Covid in late summer 2022. Paxlovid killed my fever and it never came back, but I dis have a paxlovid rebound, and tested positive for around two weeks. I had a minor “this is not getting better” freakout around this time, fwiw.

I am in Portland almost every day and in no way is it “War ravaged.” We do not want or need federal troops in Portland. The Trump administration is using lies and delusions  to try to justify turning the military against US citizens. It’s illegal, dangerous, and outrageous.

Donald Trump is lying. I was at the ICE facility two days ago and saw a few peaceful protesters, not a “siege.”
