The Conservatives are threatening to abandon the phaseout date for petrol and diesel cars should they win the next election

There are so many reasons this is an awful idea you wonder whether any thought has been involved

Let me run through them 🧵🧵 1/7

Conservatives would end 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars
Party would also abolish zero-emission vehicle mandate, cutting legal requirement on carmakers to sell EVs

It's ridiculous that the Government *still* haven't banned the sale of peat.

Peat bogs are still getting dug up and used for compost and in horticulture. Ministers say they'll ban it 'when time allows'.

Get on with it already! Sign the petition:

UK EV drivers save £540 more on running costs than those in Germany.

Why? Combo of smart meters + flexible tariffs is now widespread in the UK but in its infancy in Germany.

75% of *all* Reform donations *ever* have come from just three rich men

Europe must absorb a hard truth: principles won’t buy influence in Washington anymore. Money will.
Europe must show Trump the money – if it wants any say in what comes next in Ukraine

Can’t remember budget ‘case studies’ ever being quite so funny. Especially in newspapers that recently anointed Liz Truss a fiscal genius.
Wow - this guy must be really, REALLY bad with money if an extra £208 per month will “ruin” his retirement.

Let’s take a look at his situation based on what he told the @Telegraph

Because this does NOT add up!

No, this is not a “poor pensioner” scrabbling around for pennies…

Amazing - why no widespread coverage?
Amazing the world’s 5th largest economy (California) increased its GDP (81% up) and cut its GHG emissions (21% cut) since 2000, BUT not a single major news outlet covered the story? Obviously the fossil fuel industry and its sycophants don’t want the world to know.

The only good news in this deal is that it shows that both the Americans and the Russians know it’s actually the Europeans who hold all the cards here — because they hold the money
The “deal” deprives Ukraine of everything it has won by withstanding Russian aggression and defending the borders of Europe.

It rewards Russian lawlessness—and makes America complicit in the lawlessness.

It’s the end of post WWII American power.

This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.
