This is the best Scottish ghost story written in the 21st century so far. I devoured the novel in one sitting. It had that rare ability: it made me forget that I’m a critic. I simply lost myself in its pages as a reader.

My review of Hawthorn by Elaine Thomson

'This the best Scottish ghost story of the 21st century … I read it in one sitting'
Hawthorn: A Scottish Ghost by Elaine Thomson is wonderfully and unapologetically Scottish, filled with delicious Gaelic words like ‘turadh’…

This update of the 1995 documentary series is utterly authoritative. And its tweak of the Fab Four’s songs is a thing of wonder – their music absolutely thumps!

This has lost me thousands of pounds (not to mention book sales) and put me in a state of terror and panic. I urge anyone thinking of moving their list from Substack, or wanting to know more about how Substack works, to read it....
I'm not going back to Substack. I will continue to post my newsletters from Ghost. But I did have to get back in there, just to post this and let people who thought I'd vanished know about this utter nightmare: substack.com/home/post/p-...
An Explanation (Which I Would Be Very Grateful If You Took The Time To Read)
What follows is a minor modern horror story.

That's why it's urgent we give them the right equipment to keep warm, connected and encourage sales

It’s the exclusive everyone wanted, the story that will win next year’s Pulitzer…

I can reveal London’s giant AI generated Christmas artwork, the subject of much online mockery, is being torn down - and I honestly *genuinely* think you’ll never guess why. www.londoncentric.media/p/ai-artwork...

The bizarre story of why a much-talked-about creation is being torn down. Plus: Docklands Light Railway extension, giant laser stalks the night sky, and more tales of Android phone theft rejection.

I'm sure I've seen examples earlier than 1998 - but here's the story of Birmingham "banning" Christmas in 1998. (X is currently claiming that Tesco has banned Christmas):

In 1998, Michael Chubb’s team at Birmingham city council came up with ‘Winterval’ – and the backlash is still being felt today

I was wondering about Andrew Gold's origin story. He sold a documentary to the BBC, couldn't sell another - it's extremely competitive - & claims it's because he's white, so now he peddles racism on YouTube.
