I'm agog! FORTS is one of @usatoday.com's bestselling #picturebooks this week!

Thank you to all the indie bookstores who believe in this book and have been sharing it with their customers. ❤️💙📚

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Both! It's generally just the absolute best of what I've read in the last 4-6 months (regardless of theme), but what also seems to often happen is I unconsciously (or consciously) seem to gravitate toward certain types of books. This season, I seem to have been craving and responding most to vibes.

My fall newsletter is out, for those of you looking for new vibey reads! I had a backlog, so there are lots of kids and adult book recommendations in this one. :)

I do not understand him. I just know that he slept peacefully like this for over an hour and that he’s the bestest boy.

Thank you to Cait for the kind words! 🥰🥰🥰

Writers, you know how much it means when another author says they wish they had written something. 🫶🥹😭

This is a story I wish I wrote. Lyrical. Gorgeous. My little talked about all the forts we have around the house now and have had in the past. So lovely.
Cover for Forts shows a treetop scene with a small blue tree house and a little girl with a white cat sitting in the door to the fort.

Pleased* to announce my second picture book! MEDUSA'S PET ROCK is slated to launch Fall 2026, with @harpercollins.bsky.social

*Pleasssssssed

Thanks to my agent @allielevick.bsky.social and editor Megan Ilnitzki for loving this story as much as I do ❤️🐍🏺 Can't wait for you all to read it!
#kidlit
BOOK DEAL: Megan Ilnitzki at HarperCollins has acquired, at auction, Medusa's Pet Rock and a second untitled mythology-based picture book by Steph Lau (The Abominable Snow Dancer). When it's Medusa's turn to take the class pet home, she tries to be careful, but inevitably, ZAP. Medusa's teacher won't give up, though, and she's sure that this time, she's found a class pet that even Medusa can enjoy. Publication is planned for fall 2026; Alexandra Levick at Writers House sold world rights.

A headshot of a smiling woman with a felt plushie snake curled around her neck. Below is a chubby toddler Medusa, trying to share her juice box with her pet rock.

Ghosts in sheets? BOO-ring! Check out the haunt couture in #SoNotGhoul. This underworldly tale about Mimi, a Chinese American ghost in bicultural limbo, is brought to life by Chinese-style rituals, Mandarin puns, and—of course—ghost fashion. Written by me and illustrated by Bonnie Lui. #Halloween 👻🎃
Graphic featuring cover of "So Not Ghoul" has a blue-and-pink palette to match the cover. On the cover: Mimi, a smiling Chinese American girl ghost, is next to a white cat, who is side-eyeing three girl ghouls sneering at Mimi. Above: "Mimi doesn't look like the other ghosts—but she wishes she did." Below: "A pun-tacular ghost story."—Booklist

Illustrating my belief that movies and TV are not my competition as a writer. Kids who love a movie want to read books that are like that movie.

3rd week of school & I finally had time to get a little book display put up!

I just gobbled the Book of I by David Greig. It was a mere snack that just made me hungry for more slim books. What other super short (~150 page) books have you loved? (I'm thinking adult books, but I might be interested in short YA at the moment!)

This funny thread is 100% why I don't believe video games are my competition as a writer. Kids who love Fortnite want to read about Fortnite. Anything that makes a kid want to read turns them into a reader, which is good for everyone, everywhere.

It's seven years since we posted on Twitter about how kids kept coming into the library asking if we had any books about FORTNITE. We didn't back then, and we'd never heard of it so we tried asking what it was.

Well done, Stephanie, on bringing a very important and a very silly (thus, also important) book into the world.

Very conflicting emotions today as I celebrate TWO book birthdays. I'm very proud of NOT LIKE EVERY DAY *and* ZOMBIE AND BRAIN ARE FRIENDS. Both sold in the exact same month in 2022 to different champions (editors) who have been so supportive and wonderful to work with.
