Hope folks feel less alone today, that people join with others to take further and deeper actions, and that everyone fights like hell to protect those most vulnerable to this regime.

I say all of the time that sincerity is a virtue and it is. I like earnestness.

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

Telling moment: I was walking back from the rally, but a couple miles from it, carrying nothing but my gigantic American flag. An eight year old on his bike sees me with it and yells "No Kings!!" with absolute conviction.

My friends, they have lost the flag.

They didn't turn up looking for a fight. They weren't in riot gear for once. No mounted police and I didn't see any snipers (though I might just not have seen them). A lot of the cops weren't even in normal gear they were in like polo shirts
ZERO arrests at No Kings in NYC. (And the NYPD isn’t notorious for being sympathetic with people anti-Trump.)

This proves what shameless liars Speaker Mike Johnson & Karoline Leavitt are to slander the participants as violent anarchists.

I find it strange how rarely people in the U.S. and outside of it truly contend with how VAST the country is geographically.

Folks LOVE to mention France but Paris has a population of 2 million people and is 40 square miles.

NYC has a population of 8.5 million and is over 460 square miles

‼️CONFIRMED: Nearly 7 million people turned out for No Kings today.

With more than 2,700 lawful and peaceful protests across all 50 states, today’s mobilization was 14 times larger than both of Trump’s presidential inaugurations combined, marking a historic moment of unity and resistance.

Would you say 10,000 people today? It was huge!
I also bought this cabbage from a tent on my way back to my car.
Estimated about 10,000 people at the Naperville #NoKings rally. Both pastors who spoke said we can’t go back to the way things were. We need to build a better country for everyone. Tons of cute dogs. A bunch of us helped someone push their stalled car out of an intersection. It was great.

If you were out in the streets today, thanks. If you left feeling inspired, please seek out local ways that you can keep organizing with others.

Raleigh Indivisible had a table with other ways to get involved and was running a fundraiser for school snacks to highlight cuts to the school nutrition program.

They did a great job!

notice the general mood of the timeline? how everyone is in a good mood and there’s a lot less misery and dooming? how there’s a lot of “we’re going to beat these assholes”?

anyway that’s why these events are important

ICYMI earlier this month, I wrote this about going to the Broadview ICE facility and the horrors ICE & DHS are inflicting on Chicago (and Chi is certainly not alone in this) www.vanityfair.com/news/story/c...
Postcard From Chicago: There’s an ICE Facility in My Backyard
Chicago was not a war zone when Trump’s Operation Midway Blitz began. DHS and ICE have made it one.
