the political media is a type of self-serious entertainment designed to parse rhetoric as though it is policy while taking no position on matters of actual public concern, because to do that would alienate some of those entertained by the gossip.

Yeah. If there's one thing that doesn't make logical sense it's not wanting people with Nazi tattoos in the party. Like, either just say the party that matters to you is small and white, or maybe realize that inviting a guy with Nazi tattoos in is gonna make the party small and white.

AOC responds on here as does her team. But, personally, whether they check or not, I don't think we need to attempt to loop her into a conversation about unserious people not taking her seriously. There's no reason to do that.

But, to the point, the reaction many are having to Platner and the idea of an economic populism to "save the Democratic Party," as this conversation seems to believe, is that white men are what really matters. Everyone and everything else can be sacrificed. There is no coalition, just whiteness.

Beginning to believe "elite" means little more than someone whose concern is preserving their status over all other considerations.

It scrambles my conception of the word. Like, Bill Ackman, elite, all that matters is status. Bill Kristol, not elite?, he'd lose status before bending to Trump.

ordinary americans are filming ice agents and trying to save their neighbors. for all the hemming and hawing during 2024 about how democracy was an elite concern, the elites gave up far more quickly than average people.
