Every Jadoube goes on a quest to find their "role" in life, which is revealed to them by their personal waja (a metal like platinum). Part of that waja is then tattooed to their body.

Yuhwa took a step back, examining him from head to toe. Now she noticed the waja designs trailing down his hands and each finger. They sketched the typical mediward symbols of cauldrons and third eyes. Not that either had ever been part of Jadoube medical working, but the iconography didn’t always make perfect sense. Her mother had been a baker: her waja formed a loaf of bánhti, perfect in every detail, but her tattoos had wrapped around her eyes in replicas of flames. Had they been black rather than waja she’d have been mistaken for a Tschuele.

Paul wouldn’t say this aloud, but he wouldn’t lie to himself, either: he knew there was a good chance he’d be a herald like his sister. It would only make sense, wouldn’t it? Something in these dragons needed what Humans offered. Whether that was their relative youth as a species (fresh blood, as it were), or something specific in the Phelan DNA, he didn’t care. But he was listening to all the hints being dropped, keeping mental notes.

“The people. The colors and languages, the myriad cultures and…just all of it. We have nations and tribes, what we call races. But they’re all the same species. This is like the ultimate Wonderland variety grab-bag, and I haven’t seen enough. It’s too soon to lose it.”

“How was the core?” Yuhwa had snuck up on him and he suppressed a jump.
“Gorgeous. And I learned about those silver tattoos you’re going to get someday.” When Yuhwa blanched and dropped her head, he made a note to push later. There was quite a gulf between Tangun’s assertion the quest was a joyous revelation of their path in life and Yuhwa’s negative reaction right there.

I noticed the smell first, a heavy, pungent, petroleum stench; then I saw the bottle at her feet. Lighter fluid. From how intense the smell was, she had dumped the entire bottle into the carpet while I was distracted. This fire bug had come prepared to do more than burn a little skin this time. She had been planning to immolate her next victim. She might still manage it.
I reached for my gun, but the lighter was already falling from her hand. I covered my face with my arm and turned away as flames erupted from the carpet. I looked back up to see her running for the door. The flames weren’t that bad, yet. I could go after her, but if I did, the unconscious bus boy would likely burn. Shit.
I grabbed the boy under the armpits and dragged him towards the kitchen. The room froze as I pushed through the door. I passed the unconscious employee to the man nearest me. “There is a fire in the hall. Take him outside and call 9-1-1. I’m going to go and get…”
I left the thought unfinished as I sprinted from the room. They were all too stunned to ask questions at the moment, but that would change if I stuck around. Besides, if I had any hope of catching up to Carla, I had no time to waste.

“I am Swailu jo Faluji, Toledral Speaker and – I hope – friend of the Kawakona and her seeker. So very pleased to meet all of you.”

They made quick introductions, then Swailu led them deeper into her house. It was the perfect abode for a winged person; large, open living space and highly arched ceilings. Backless seating surrounding a low table in one area, and backless chairs pushed up against a ten-person dining table. The real showstopper was the entire wall missing on one side, not even windows, just open. It offered an unimpeded view of the core, spread below them. A wooden deck that she could probably use for takeoff and landing stretched all the way around the house.

She wasn’t a hundred percent sure she’d walk down to see Bay today (morning rationality made her more insecure than last night Katy) but she was pretty drawn to him… it scored in the ninety percent vicinity. Her hair, often a terrifying basket of frizzy un-wrangled snakes, was behaving. The day was shaping up to be a pleasantly warm one, so the walk from the Central Library branch on Fourth to Pike Place might be welcome and invigorating. A late lunch break would avoid any tourist crush, plus she could stop by the market’s private library and try to schmooze her way into an interview.

“I think….” She trailed off. “One of the few great memories I have left of my mother is her telling me the stories. Jadoube are more like Lunari than Muškikal, we don’t write down much. Different reasons, though. Memory, especially genetic memory, is prized in my people. It’s considered critical in our maturation to memorize important stories and tales, to pass them on to new generations or people like your family.”

Fox is having a rough morning.

Fox opened her eyes on a small cot, somewhere cool and damp. Stone floor, stone walls, barred window. She sighed internally. Nothing quite like waking up half-dead in a prison cell to start your day off right.
How many times could you wake up in a dungeon without having to rethink your life choices? She decided that the number probably hovered around one, which boded poorly for her. Better not to think too hard about it.
Besides, thinking was somewhat beyond her, at the moment. Her head throbbed. Actually, her entire body throbbed, her head was just the worst offender.
Fox tried to sit up, but couldn’t quite muster the strength to do so, so instead she sank back onto the bed with a groan.
There was a scrape of chair legs on stone and a moment later Av’ry appeared at the bars, a stern-faced guard shadowing his steps.
“You’re finally awake! You really had me worried this time, Fox,” he said.
“I’m not dead, then?” she croaked. “I wasn’t certain.”
“Not quite. Though it was a close thing.”
