I wasn’t just going to wander out into the wilderness with no supplies or weapons. And I figured you mentioned that blade for a reason.” “Good. Did you see the mountain on your way in?” “How, exactly, could I miss a mountain?” Fox ignored his sarcasm. “We need to collapse the entrance to a small cave there. You have enough to do that?” “I should. I’ll need to prepare it, though. You going to tell me what this is about?” “Tomorrow. I promise. Just get it ready. When it is time, I’ll signal you. Come find me and we’ll do what I came here for. Don’t forget the sword.” “Alright. But just so we understand each other, this is the last thing I do on faith, Fox.” “Don’t worry. It will all be pretty obvious once we get there. And if we survive it, I’ll answer anything you ask.”

By the time they’d been rounded up, shoved into yet another damn cargo carrier, and whisked away to wherever holding chambers lived on this Wheel, Paul was over it. This trip had been an escapade at first, now it was tiresome and more than a little upsetting. What if they got ejected and sent back to an Earth busy destroying itself in panic? What if Katy had been full of shit all along and there was no dragon rescue? Where were their Mikanjo and Jadoube friends who’d so conveniently disappeared upon arrival? His anger mounting, amped by fear, Paul shoved back against the cop pushing him out of the hotel. All that got him was a vicious shoulder pinch that deadened a nerve for the rest of their walk to the prison barge. His family was loaded onto the vehicle and their cuffs secured to a bar running along the middle of the large platform. No sides or cover of any kind, everyone around them staring in shock and judgement as the Phelan family was locked into place by space jackboots. Helluva welcome to the Aoni.

Individualistic or personal. “Is that something your people see as a cause, a thing they’d fight for?” Paul was fascinated. “Or is it more of a ‘stay out of my business and I stay out of yours’ idea?” Na clapped his hands, startling everyone. “You have it exactly! My people are entirely selfish except when it comes to frelaasti. For that we will cut throats, lie cheat and steal.” “Not seeing the difference between usual Nyakisi mercenary attitudes and this frelaasti,” Olak piped up. She had an arm around Raisa, who was snuggled into the voice on a shared loveseat. “The difference,” Na replied, “is that when other people’s frelaasti is compromised, we’ll fight for that too.”

The initial sal-ang in the chamber didn’t go well. Deb vomited, sheer panic at the idea the vacuum of space was “only a window away!” making her sick. Brianna trembled, too, but not as bad as Deb. She’d thought the others might be equally challenged, but Patrick and Vasuda were cuddled together on a couch, dreamy smiles on their faces as they watched space move by. “Years ago, they went through a ‘shrooms phase,” Paul murmured. “This is probably nothing for them.” Martin wouldn’t stop moving long enough to look out the windows, far more interested in the furniture and construction materials. He and Kweza were having detailed training about layout and design on the Eternidad. A loud “marvelous!” erupted from different parts of the room every few kaalas.

Thirty-seven divers clung loosely to ropes hanging from thirty-seven small boats.  Eyes closed, separated by no more than one or two swim strokes, breathing in sync. Yemoja wouldn’t need to watch her companions to time her dive. By this, her fourth performance, it was second nature. That didn’t make it less special, and a shivering rush of anticipation flooded her. She led, and younger women may look to her for their first time.

In all her years of reading fairy tales and adventures, she’d never considered what the heroes felt in these moments. The gut-clenching, bowel-emptying, voice-stealing fright. Her eyes wouldn’t close, or move away from Yfaun’s cruel grin. She couldn’t gather her voice, call him names, beg for mercy. No aoiti to explain what nasty name he’d just called her, no Air to comfort her. Utter paralysis of spirit and body. He reached out and slapped her once more, just because he could, or because it was fun for him. This jostled her body enough that the pendant slid up to the hollow of her throat, catching his eye.

Tor looked round her companions, all of them now clad in sober rusty brown. There were subtle variations, different fabrics having taken up the dye a little more or less, but it would be a fine exercise to show them in a painting without exaggerating the colours. In truth, she thought, the brown wasn’t very flattering on any of them—the pale silvery blue the Lay Sisters wore would have been kinder—but it was particularly unkind to Aliénor, being so close to the colour of her skin. The breeze in her cropped hair was odd, but not unpleasant. Aliénor’s longer, bobbed, locks kept straying across her face; she would hook the hair back behind an ear with an absently exasperated look. If you’re going to have short hair, thought Tor, maybe really short is best. The other four had brown cloths wrapped around their heads; Benavir kept fiddling with hers and Raëval looked hot and a little bothered. She wondered how many of the four would persist. If summer in Carwerid was anything like summer in Denvirran—and they lay on almost exactly the same latitude—the head-wraps would be something of a trial.

Big drama on the wheel today as the baddies try to cause trouble in the Calling (an alien U.N.). Paul and Yuhwa are spectators to it all.

“Sundancer Orange,” Tio spoke clearly and slowly. “This emergency procedure was put in place to address events where an ambassador has credible fears of life-threatening risk to either themselves or the Calling at large.” He spun his sled to face the PQs, lowering his incredible bejeweled head. “The Vi'isser clan may not technically invoke the procedure, as they are not ambassadors.” “I am petitioning the emergency status; my companions spoke out of turn.” Snotty guy from yesterday with the creepy black chin mask didn’t even hesitate to butt in. Had they premeditated their plan of attack? “Qo Uitu’umen,” Tio demanded, “provide your evidence of imminent threat.” The previous cacophony died, leaving an audience of ambassadors on tenterhooks.

“Let me handle this,” Driona says and takes a step forward. “Greetings, officer! I come bearing an end to headaches for one of your number!” she says with a smile. “What’s this? You can’t land here, this is government space! Please vacate and leave, before an arrest has to be made!” the policeman retorts angrily. “Here, I think this will explain everything,” Driona responds and shows him the card. His scaly reptilian brow furrows as he takes the card in his thick, round hands, turning it over and over to look at it from all sides. Then he produces some kind of handheld device and taps the card to it, reading the text that floods onto the small display screen on the instrument. He looks up to fix me with a penetrating stare. “That was you? You knocked me on my shell! Took me ten minutes to right myself!” “Uh, sorry about that, I was a bit confused at the time,” I say apologetically. His eyes narrow and he hands Driona the card back. “Up the stairs to the fourth floor, left corridor, third door on your right,” he says gruffly and turns away without another word.

What shows on the screen is difficult to make out at first glance. Then, I see it all. A sky-blue birthday cake. In the centre is a miniature model of the Eiffel Tower with a fondant-made 21 leaning against it. The rest of the surface is crammed with fondant decorations: Open books, a 2D YouTube logo, clouds. As for the side of the cake... "Is that writing?" "Inscriptions of your favourite book quotes. Oh my gosh, yes. I think I can make out 'You are home for me now' from a Cassandra Clare novel, one of my favourite lines ever. Throat closing up with Moodboard with seven images: a city skyline, the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee, a young South Asian woman looking out of a window, the back of a young man looking down at his feet on a beach, a young couple in each other’s arms, a young girl sitting on the pavement filming something with a camera on a tripod, an aesthetic photo of a open book surrounded by coffee mugs and a camera. The text across the board reads “first love is rarely forever.”

“Fucking finally,” Beskros grumbled as the notification finally arrived. “Okay, we’re next in line for the gate. Get ready for two eightdays of boring.” Clarke blinked. “How do you know—actually, can I watch?” “Why?” Beskros snorted. “Sure, if you want.” I let out a sigh of relief as the Human followed Beskros to the flight deck, only to find myself disappointed a few marks later when the Human burst back into the room. “Tai! It’s just panels!” she said accusingly, as if Beskros and I had somehow tricked her. I didn’t know what to say. What did she expect on a flight deck, giant panes of glass? A canopy poking out of the hull to let Beskros peer outside? Surely that wasn’t how it worked on the passenger ships she’d served on.

Sighing, Yuhwa touched Lia’s arm and indicated they should walk. “I’m less brash, but still not a skilled negotiator. Which is why I sought you out. The Imen aren’t willing to let us land on Hadea, nor will they fly this Thuliso Maor up to us. We’re stuck and I’m hoping you can break us free.” Her face clouded. “I can’t help feeling like we need to be back with Katy and Raisa. They’re like babes, born into our Aoni without protections or support.” By now they’d reached their destination and crossed the portal threshold into a comms chamber filled with angry seekers. Lia saw an Imen face on the main screen, momentarily arrested by the vastly different physiology of this species. While most advanced people in the Aoni followed a roughly similar blueprint – bipedal, symmetrical limbs and features, soft skin – the Imen were different. Four legs, a reptilian hide and face, long thick tails. Their faces were surrounded by a bony frill they could flatten or flare at will, and each one decorated their frill with gems and colored stones. If anyone in the Aoni knew the significance behind the Imen bejeweling themselves like that, Lia hadn’t ever heard. Maybe it was meant for distraction, since it had grabbed her attention. Every eye in the room, including the Imen’s, locked on Lia.

Raisa’s father had a darker complexion than his daughter but similar features. He was short-statured by Human standards, well-rounded and half-bald. He shook his head. “Sweet, I know you want to stay close to your new friends, but I am not comfortable here.”
Raisa’s mother reached for her father, softly pleading, “Hassan, please, reconsider. This is much nicer than the apartment we were assigned out there.” She had gorgeous brown eyes in a slender face, broken up by wrinkles that Brianna Phelan had assured Yuhwa meant a life well-lived. Her delicate hand rested on her husband’s upper arm. “We know nothing of that city we were dropped in, we don’t know anyone there. Bangkok is no more a home than the moon! At least from here we could rest and search for more of our family.”
