By the time they’d been rounded up, shoved into yet another damn cargo carrier, and whisked away to wherever holding chambers lived on this Wheel, Paul was over it. This trip had been an escapade at first, now it was tiresome and more than a little upsetting. What if they got ejected and sent back to an Earth busy destroying itself in panic? What if Katy had been full of shit all along and there was no dragon rescue? Where were their Mikanjo and Jadoube friends who’d so conveniently disappeared upon arrival? His anger mounting, amped by fear, Paul shoved back against the cop pushing him out of the hotel. All that got him was a vicious shoulder pinch that deadened a nerve for the rest of their walk to the prison barge. His family was loaded onto the vehicle and their cuffs secured to a bar running along the middle of the large platform. No sides or cover of any kind, everyone around them staring in shock and judgement as the Phelan family was locked into place by space jackboots. Helluva welcome to the Aoni.

Individualistic or personal. “Is that something your people see as a cause, a thing they’d fight for?” Paul was fascinated. “Or is it more of a ‘stay out of my business and I stay out of yours’ idea?” Na clapped his hands, startling everyone. “You have it exactly! My people are entirely selfish except when it comes to frelaasti. For that we will cut throats, lie cheat and steal.” “Not seeing the difference between usual Nyakisi mercenary attitudes and this frelaasti,” Olak piped up. She had an arm around Raisa, who was snuggled into the voice on a shared loveseat. “The difference,” Na replied, “is that when other people’s frelaasti is compromised, we’ll fight for that too.”

The initial sal-ang in the chamber didn’t go well. Deb vomited, sheer panic at the idea the vacuum of space was “only a window away!” making her sick. Brianna trembled, too, but not as bad as Deb. She’d thought the others might be equally challenged, but Patrick and Vasuda were cuddled together on a couch, dreamy smiles on their faces as they watched space move by. “Years ago, they went through a ‘shrooms phase,” Paul murmured. “This is probably nothing for them.” Martin wouldn’t stop moving long enough to look out the windows, far more interested in the furniture and construction materials. He and Kweza were having detailed training about layout and design on the Eternidad. A loud “marvelous!” erupted from different parts of the room every few kaalas.

Thirty-seven divers clung loosely to ropes hanging from thirty-seven small boats.  Eyes closed, separated by no more than one or two swim strokes, breathing in sync. Yemoja wouldn’t need to watch her companions to time her dive. By this, her fourth performance, it was second nature. That didn’t make it less special, and a shivering rush of anticipation flooded her. She led, and younger women may look to her for their first time.

In all her years of reading fairy tales and adventures, she’d never considered what the heroes felt in these moments. The gut-clenching, bowel-emptying, voice-stealing fright. Her eyes wouldn’t close, or move away from Yfaun’s cruel grin. She couldn’t gather her voice, call him names, beg for mercy. No aoiti to explain what nasty name he’d just called her, no Air to comfort her. Utter paralysis of spirit and body. He reached out and slapped her once more, just because he could, or because it was fun for him. This jostled her body enough that the pendant slid up to the hollow of her throat, catching his eye.

Big drama on the wheel today as the baddies try to cause trouble in the Calling (an alien U.N.). Paul and Yuhwa are spectators to it all.

“Sundancer Orange,” Tio spoke clearly and slowly. “This emergency procedure was put in place to address events where an ambassador has credible fears of life-threatening risk to either themselves or the Calling at large.” He spun his sled to face the PQs, lowering his incredible bejeweled head. “The Vi'isser clan may not technically invoke the procedure, as they are not ambassadors.” “I am petitioning the emergency status; my companions spoke out of turn.” Snotty guy from yesterday with the creepy black chin mask didn’t even hesitate to butt in. Had they premeditated their plan of attack? “Qo Uitu’umen,” Tio demanded, “provide your evidence of imminent threat.” The previous cacophony died, leaving an audience of ambassadors on tenterhooks.

Sighing, Yuhwa touched Lia’s arm and indicated they should walk. “I’m less brash, but still not a skilled negotiator. Which is why I sought you out. The Imen aren’t willing to let us land on Hadea, nor will they fly this Thuliso Maor up to us. We’re stuck and I’m hoping you can break us free.” Her face clouded. “I can’t help feeling like we need to be back with Katy and Raisa. They’re like babes, born into our Aoni without protections or support.” By now they’d reached their destination and crossed the portal threshold into a comms chamber filled with angry seekers. Lia saw an Imen face on the main screen, momentarily arrested by the vastly different physiology of this species. While most advanced people in the Aoni followed a roughly similar blueprint – bipedal, symmetrical limbs and features, soft skin – the Imen were different. Four legs, a reptilian hide and face, long thick tails. Their faces were surrounded by a bony frill they could flatten or flare at will, and each one decorated their frill with gems and colored stones. If anyone in the Aoni knew the significance behind the Imen bejeweling themselves like that, Lia hadn’t ever heard. Maybe it was meant for distraction, since it had grabbed her attention. Every eye in the room, including the Imen’s, locked on Lia.

Raisa’s father had a darker complexion than his daughter but similar features. He was short-statured by Human standards, well-rounded and half-bald. He shook his head. “Sweet, I know you want to stay close to your new friends, but I am not comfortable here.”
Raisa’s mother reached for her father, softly pleading, “Hassan, please, reconsider. This is much nicer than the apartment we were assigned out there.” She had gorgeous brown eyes in a slender face, broken up by wrinkles that Brianna Phelan had assured Yuhwa meant a life well-lived. Her delicate hand rested on her husband’s upper arm. “We know nothing of that city we were dropped in, we don’t know anyone there. Bangkok is no more a home than the moon! At least from here we could rest and search for more of our family.”

“This is waja, a metal found predominantly on my people’s planet. Malor.” “It’s like platinum or silver from Earth. Lighter, though. Like air but solid,” he marveled. “Is it strong?” Lia, still looking at both of them curiously, said absently, “You’ll see when we get to Centris, all the Swords have weapons of waja. The Jadoube are famous for that.” “That’s sturdy enough to make weapons?! Wait, you’re fighters? I thought Jadoube were pilots?” Paul looked honestly confused. “One atóm,” Yuhwa said, going for the drinks. She resumed when she got back. “We all start out as majio. Pilots, as you say. Eventually, after several aiwaks we are called home by the nawa.” Paul interrupted her. “Aiwaks? Centuries? Seriously, you cannot be that old.” Lia laughed merrily. “She is very young, both for a majio on such a large ship, and in comparison to almost everyone living on the Eternidad.” She leaned forward. “I am four times her four aiwaks!”

They exited a short hallway to some kind of loading bay. The eruption of music, cheering and singing when they emerged was deafening. The space overflowed with Mikanjo. At least, Katy assumed they were, since Bay had said they were the only people with wings and she saw wings everywhere. And these wings were attached to people jumping into the air, performing quick loop-de-loops, and dropping back into a mosh pit of dancing and singing. Each one shouting “Kawakona!” over and over.
 In the short time Katy had known Bay she’d gotten the impression Mikanjo were a formal society. He was often very precise how he spoke, eschewed contractions, took care with physical contact, all the hallmarks of more circumscribed people. And this despite a millennium on Earth. She’d assumed they were one hundred percent a Masterpiece Theater-style, quiet-of-manor people. But this was delightful pandemonium and triumphant excess. They had a hundred thousand years of destiny to celebrate, and the cork on a bottle that tightly sealed was as like to detonate as merely pop.

The hell was he talking about, not from Earth, blah blah? This whole day had gotten out of control. It was a flat-out dog’s dinner, a chaotic “minus craic” as Da would say. She’d thought she was flirting with a handsome guy who made pretty things. She’d thought he was into her, too, that they’d had a moment at Pike Place and it would lead to something exciting. A meaningful instant where they’d connected…. Right before the freaky dude in makeup tried to kill Raisa. And would have gone after Katy, too, sounded like. Because of some prophecy? That was straight-up cult shite. 
 The longer she stewed on this, the more Katy got a sick feeling that it was all a prank. Oran could absolutely dream up something this crazy and get a friend or two to help him pull it off. Her twin started his windups unnaturally young, gluing her toys into the toybox when they were four. As he got older and more devious, he would make her belongings disappear then reappear in embarrassing places. Like her first bra hoisted in the school cafeteria. Once for Halloween he’d coordinated all the brothers and they’d convinced her the ghost of J.P. Patches, beloved Seattle clown, was coming to take her to hell. The logic was convoluted and relied heavily on Katy not being a Patches Pal (she was twenty years too late for that club and didn’t even know what it meant).

“I’m sorry, I’m trying to think of the easiest way to do this, but screw it. Ripping off the bandage now.” Katy stepped in front of Raisa, grabbed her hands, and said, “Turns out there are aliens. Loads of ‘em. We’re talking Star Trek, Star Wars numbers. They’re way more advanced than we are. There used to be dragons, who went to sleep for some reason a long time ago, but we need to wake them up now.”
Raisa’s jaw dropped after Katy’s first sentence. Her eyes slowly widened, until Katy worried they might pop out. 
“Bay, the one I introduced to you at the market, has wings. His whole species does. They were hidden before in a compression bag thingy. Lanu is the one with glow-in-the-dark tattoos, they’re the owner of this whole island – did I already say we’re on a secret island in the San Juans? – and they’re a totally different kind of alien than Bay.
“That last one,” she dropped her voice, “is the piece of shit who attacked us at Pike Place.”
“Attacked us?!” Raisa shrieked at the same time Yfaun called, “A piece of shit who has very good hearing.”

“Far more likely your friend was scooped up by my seconds,” he hissed, not bothering to wipe her spittle away. “Even if she evaded them, this station is large and there hasn’t been enough time to mount a full sweep. Not when we control the surveillance and they have no idea where to begin looking.” He shook his mask at her.
“They don’t need to see your face to see you dragging me around,” Katy snarled. “That’d be pretty sketchy, even in the crowd we were in.”

While Swailu said goodbye to Tangun at the wall-side exit, Adena walked between Paul and the windows and opened her wings. “This will cause comment, no doubt. We rarely spread them all the way here, but it’s useful to me now.” She smiled. If she were Human, Paul would compare her to a white-haired, Hawaiian grandmother. “Tell me your name, hooman. Hewman. Yes, tell me your name and repeat your species name. Slow and clear, if you please.” They’d gone over it twice when the opened the door once again, admitting Bay, Lia, Katy, and Yuhwa. He felt relief wash over him, surprised at the strength of it. Was that because he felt safer in a group, or because he’d missed Yuhwa and Lia? They, more than his sister and Bay, been his first lifeline into this Aoni muddle. He felt a scooch unmoored if they weren’t present. Paul’s big brother side had also kicked into overdrive: Bug needed him to watch out for her, because she was a fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants mess out here.
