I can’t wait to show this exchange to my grandmother and break it all down for her, including explaining what a Pepe is.

My lesbian friends just moved in together and I believe in love and all that but… let’s just say I’m watching all of this closely.

George Michael releases “Faith” as a single 38 yrs ago today.

Asked why he chose it as a title, he said: “I believe that the forces of Good and Evil are real things. … I do not have a religion, but I believe that one can influence one’s life, one’s future, through faith and decency towards others.”

A lot of really great, really cool people have died since 2016, and we’re still here with the bad guys. Did anyone consider that maybe God is soft-launching the rapture?

I hear you. It’s the weird disavowal of one’s single life the moment a relationship starts that I always find fascinating.

The social media soft launch of a dying relationship:

1) a few strained couple photos at work/family events, then
2) a period of quiet, followed by close-up photos of random objects, then
3) friend dates, and a renewed interest in work, then
4) sexy gym selfies, looking rejuvenated.

The social media soft launch of a new boyfriend:

1) a few selfies looking rejuvenated, then
2) one-sided photos of dinners and trips that suggest the presence of another person, then
3) an official couple photo, buried in an Instagram carousel of moments. “My life was garbage before you, Stefan!”

The thing that weirds me out about Gen Z's cultural reference window isn't that it is small (I get it, no monoculture) but that there seems to be zero interest in engaging with artists even ten to fifteen years outside of their lifetimes.

Jared Leto may have a toxic reputation, he may have a wildly unappealing screen presence, but say what you will, he also can't open a movie either.

I hope the 2021 Candyman gets its due one day. It's far from a perfect film and feels (weirdly) like it's missing an act, but what is there is so potent and visually striking that I'm excited to see what DaCosta does with the 28 Years Later sequel.

And I know some gays will be pissed at the Mrs. Loomis/Debbie Salt erasure. Look, Laurie Metcalf rules. And the twist was a good one. But I still think Scream 2 lapses into camp in a way that doesn’t make it the same grim kinda scary as Scream and Scream 4.

I also think the choreography of the Olivia’s murder, the decision to kill Kirby, and the meta-opening suggesting franchise exhaustion are all brilliant.

Scream 2, 3, 5 and 6 were all about franchises and fandoms. Which is fine, just heightened and less horrifying because the killers felt less real. Billy, Stu, and Jill are believable monsters. And the montage of Jill harming herself for an alibi is one of Craven’s best.

The original Scream is a horror-thriller about two high school kids organizing a pre-Columbine mass killing. Scream 4 is about the flattening of fame and infamy and the idea that innocence is irrelevant in clickbait culture. Both had something interesting to say, and commented on the other.

I still think Scream 4 is grossly underrated. If it had kept its original opening instead of going with the studio-mandated version, it’s a better film than Scream 2. There. I said it.
