An amazing day of solidarity with staff, students, and community members saying NO to compulsory redundancies and unnecessary course closures.

Just devastating. Most of my feed is rightfully outraged about the cuts to music (posed to become an "extra curricular" activity) but the cuts to modern languages are so grim too: if I understand correctly, it means no HE language provision on this side of the midlands www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The pandemic was a mass-disabling event and one of the reasons it has largely vanished from day to day political discourse is that those in power don't want to acknowledge the long term care needs it produced.

This will be a long thread on yesterday police massacre in Rio.

In nothern Rio de Janeiro city, there is a couple of hills called Complexo da Penha. It's Comando Vermelho("Red Command", a drug gang), or CV, territory.

CV is the greatest gang in Rio, second in the whole Brazil.

🧵 Awful awful massacre in Brazil
Gente, é o maior massacre no Brasil desde o Araguaia.

Ruh roh.
So I've been reading the Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper. There's some good things in there. But when it comes to universities there's very little to cheer. The situation is very tough and will get worse. The last chance to preserve what we've got has passed. Let me explain why. (1/?)

This is wild. The speakers they objected to are the local city councillor and the local MP whose ward/constituency include the university!

One has to wonder if they were so keen to invoke Prevent because one of the speakers was Muslim?

Absolutely Shellard-levels of bullying on display here.

Imagine if the infrastructure that our daily life depends on was organised according to some sort of coordinated plan, not just the chaotic outcome of billions of competitors each making decisions in the interests of profit, power, and convenience.
the aws outage should be evidence that running half the internet on a single company's servers is a terrible idea but i fear nothing will change

I'm going to Brazil! Hyped to be presenting at the next iteration of Sonoridades in June. The conference's theme is 'Silences' and will be held in Vitoria (ES). I'll be talking about tinnitus' multiple relationships with silence, both literal and figurative, and their implications for sound studies

This is such sad news. Like many others, Jonathan's work was formative to me. It's also just really impressive how he got to be something like the final boss of sound studies, and was still so nice.
RIP Jonathan Sterne. What I have always appreciated most about his work is that he really hammered home the fact that sound is not inherently good or bad, nor is it even inherently a thing. And he was a decent person with a good sense of humor to boot!
