I tell that story because nobody needs to explain why Drew Struzan was an icon and a master and the greatest of all time and a cornerstone of popular culture for more than half a century.

He was all of that, but also a guy who loved art and artists and was cool and patient with his MANY fans.

RIP

I was so stunned that I just stammered and awkwardly got out of his way. The artist he'd been waiting to see immediately realized what was happening and the stammering awe rapidly spread to him.

A titan of the form waiting in line among mortals? To see THEIR work? What a day that must've been.

I (quite literally) bumped into Drew at the final MondoCon several years ago. He'd been waiting patiently behind me to look at some of the work another poster artist had on display and as I backed away from the table, I stepped directly onto his foot.

He responded with kindness and good humor.

This is, of course, a popular “anti-manual” for managers as well. The number of times I’ve see someone utterly melt when confronted with 10a 1-4 is… significant.

He’s not The One, folks. We can find someone else to post snotty tweets about Trump who isn’t also a bought and paid-for extension of techbro oligarchs and their ruinous schemes.

And lest we leave out the bits about “quislings” and destroying fascism with sobbing, here’s the final bit.

Apropos of nothing, but to all of the essential workers out there doing triple shifts because Trump doesn’t know how to negotiate, it may be useful to familiarize yourself with this WWII-era document on sabotaging white collar/managerial agencies.

Yeah. The Rock has been attached since 2019.

My theory is that he saw this as a serious role he could credibly play, which is rare.

He’s wanted to be taken seriously pretty regularly over the years, but it’s hard because he’s so cartoonishly huge that he can’t believably play most serious roles.

All of which is to say whatever has kept you from seeing it so far is 100% valid and legit.

But Johnson really DOES bring something impressive and worthy to the performance. You don’t need to see this movie, but you should still see it anyway.

People who love MMA enough to care about Mark Kerr already know his story and have seen the documentary.

For everyone else, even in the trailers, they kind of make a point that MMA is brutal and socially problematic and bad for kids to see and corrupt and full of physical and emotional peril.

This is a good movie with an excellent performance by Johnson.

It’s also a VERY close companion to the 25+ year old documentary of the same name. Some scenes are direct replicas. And it’s about a sport that has always been dodgy, but is now aligned with fascism.

A tough hole to climb out from.

This is utter bullshit, of course. They’re using the Shadow Docket this way so they can rubber stamp fascism NOW, but retain an escape route on all of these “unitary executive” powers they’ve given to Trump in case a non-fascist ever wins the Presidency again.

I quite liked it, but can understand why some folks didn’t.

It’s very comfortable, which the original certainly was not. The awkward moments are rarely accompanied by oblivious detachment, so they feel humble.

It’s almost like they made it for fans of the BAND, rather than for fans of the film.
