Replacing contractors with government workers is the way to save money

“the in-house team proved they could do it much faster & cheaper"...keeping the work in-house meant that installation cost the MTA approximately $100,000 per station, as opposed to $300,000 per station with outside contractors"
MTA metalworkers close in on Governor’s goal: 100 more stations with platform barriers by year’s end
As part of the MTA’s push to install platform barriers in more than 100 stations across the New York City subway system, welders and machinists at the MTA’s Tiffany Iron Shop in Hunt&#8…

The main promise of tariffs was to restore manufacturing employment. That is a Trump failure where all consumers are paying the price in higher costs for everything.
The US continues to lose manufacturing jobs—payrolls are down 81k over the last year, & another 5k jobs were lost in November

Transportation (especially auto manufacturing), wood & electronics/electrical manufacturing are the biggest losers, but few subsectors are doing well

... Americans don't live nationally, and markets with most jobs/economic opportunities have significantly higher housing cost burdens.

In California, the largest state in US/4th largest economy on earth, over 50% of renters/40% of owners are housing cost burdened. calmatters.org/explainers/c....
Californians: Here's why your housing costs are so high
CA home and rent prices are among the highest in the U.S., and the state is struggling to combat a homelessness crisis and housing shortage.

Great thread
As you add cars to a geometric location, voters get more violent, less tolerant, and more conservative.

This is because car dependence requires extremely high attention to naked self-interest: Who's taking "your" parking, why are all these other drivers causing congestion on "your" commute.

Truely impressive - long term strategic investment in solar from China.

Contrast that with the chop and change policies of the West.

Imagine making this point about, say, climate investments, arguing how it'll have outsized societal and economy-wide returns, and that we should stop worrying about climate tech's returns on investments, which, in any case, we're measuring wrong.
This is hilarious. These people have never run a real business. It is 100% a scam operated by skiled, dedicated grifters.

What's remarkable is that this is still being debated. If we work our way out of these ruins, it'll be imperative to align climate action + working people -- not capitulate, especially now, to fossil fuel and technology financial interests.
The IRA was surprisingly effective at spurring investment in green energy. Where it failed was making it *politically* sustainable by delivering immediate tangible benefits to the public. In that sense, the Green New Deal was, in retrospect, the more prudent and realistic approach. on.ft.com/4n4Ayra
