sometimes Slow Horses is kind of like if Looney Tunes made a live-action adaptation of a John le Carre novel, (complimentary) (obviously)

While most of Western Europe had witch trials, in the German provinces and Switzerland they instead had werewolf trials: men and women were accused of courting Satan for the power to transform into wolves and devour their victims. These lasted into the 1700s #LegendaryWednesday
A woodblock cut of a man half-transformed into a werewolf as German peasants look on horrified. His upper half is that of a raving wolf, tongue out, while his lower half is the tunic and pants and shoes of a peasant; his arms are still human arms, as if asking "What the fuck, knock before you enter" but the werewolf is transforming in the middle of a wheat wield, so that's kind of his fault.

Among the Creole families or Trinidad and Tobago, a magic is passed down that can transform a soul into a Lagahoo, a kind of werewolf descended from the loup-garou. To kill this person you must beat them with an anointed stick until they are black mists. #LegendaryWednesday
Art by Kong, who does great Caribbean folklore art, showing a wiry figure in a loin cloth with stringy hair, a skeletal dog-like face, pointed ears, gnarly clawed hands and feet, and the posing skills of a 90s parkour expert, ready to strike from a tree, staring at the viewer.

You know what's really fun, in a classroom, as someone who started as a theatre major? Delivering an eighteenth century sermon as a performance piece to a colonial American history class.

You gently run your hand through the rack. You can feel it—pure cotton, rich wool, Irish linen. The plump buttonholes are handsewn; the buttons attached with a firm shank. You flip the price tag over. It's affordable

You buy the jacket and go home, which is only 15 mins away. Your apt is $600/month

The Wolf Man (1941, dir. Georges Waggner) stars Lon Chaney Jr as Larry Talbot, returned to his family estate after nearly two decades away. It doesn't take Larry long to fall in love or get bitten by a werewolf. Chaney really goes for it, matching the film as it gets increasingly daft, wild and fun.
The Wolf Man title card Larry Talbot's new cane, with a silver wolf's head and a pentagram on its handle Talbot's eyes, as he imagines the death of the woman he loves, Gwen. Her face is centre to the image, with a pentagram in a circle imposed over it. Talbot's feet, newly wolf-like and hairy, with his trousers seen just above, his shoes to the right of frame

Simon Magus was a magician and healer in conflict with the Apostle Peter, healing people for money and doing great shows of magic, bragging that he was stronger than Peter's God. He flew in the air and Peter prayed for God to take his flight away: he fell. #FolkloreSunday
Simon Magus' descent from the skies, showing devils allowing him to fly but angels coming from Heaven and killing the demons, thus forcing Simon to fall to his death. Peter is dressed as a 13th century cardinal in a rather small hat.

The vast majority of British magic practitioners until the 20th century were cunning folk, hedge magicians who used folk magic and low magic via devices, often amulets, elixirs, and craft taken from grimoires, to help or harm with angels, demons, or fairies. #FolkloreSunday
A model of a 19th century magician showing her using cartomancy via Tarot to divine the future for someone. She is a simple older woman with a black hat and gray cloak, a heart statue on her desk, and behind her a cabinet of elixirs, two mortars and pestles, and some pots and containers for liquids. Hanging is herbs and dolls. In her hand is a blackened crystal ball.

Another of my ghost books is ‘Ghost and Witches of the Cotswolds’ by JA Brooks. Contains some Warwickshire material as the Cotswolds extend into the county. Plus, the cover kind of reminds me of the creepy preacherman from ‘Poltergeist II’. 🧵
