16. The Fall - How I Wrote 'Elastic Man'

If I ever have to explain The Fall to anyone, this is generally the song I reach for. Even the world's grouchiest man seems like he's having fun on this ramshackle bop.

15. Kraftwerk - Computer Love

Prophetic in how it foresaw online dating. Kraftwerk already sensed (in 1981!) that computers wouldn’t just change how we work but also how we feel and connect.

#5debutalbums8084 The Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro (1980) Big, brazen pop music. I remember being blown away by the brass section, which seemed innovative and presaged its use across the 80s pop landscape. Well worth a revisit. Best track - Poppies In The Field #VinylCommunity

Virgin Prunes - …If I Die I Die
Released in 1982.
One of my favourite albums ever and will definitely be in my top five.
Yes, totally agree 👍😎
Ah, Theatre of Hate, another one I’ve missed. Good shout 🙂
I’ll give it a play later. It’s a decent album, but I doubt it will make my shortlist.
Nice to see another mention for The Dancing Did.
An unusual album, but all the better for it. There’s nothing else quite like it. It’s on my shortlist. 👍
A debut album and an only album. Loved this bunch back then….post punk folk horror from Worcestershire #5debutalbums8084

The Very Things - The Bushes Scream While My Daddy Prunes

1984
Oh, yes! This is the real deal.
Manic rhythm section, twangy guitars, weird vocals, strange dialogue from early sci fi films/programmes fading in and out.
Definitely in my top 5. Exquisite

The Mob - Let The Tribe Increase

1983 - if anarcho-punk is your bag (and maybe if it isn’t) you won’t find many better albums than this one.
Punchy, catchy, well written songs throughout, it’s an album that deserves more exposure. Brilliant stuff.

Section 25 - Always Now

Maybe influenced by Metal Box-era PiL, produced by Martin Hannett, there’s lots to like on this Factory release. The drums are to the fore, bass and vocals carry any melody, guitars provide background effects.
Worth a listen.

I can't see this being high in the final rankings, but it's definitely one of my top five. Loved this album then and still play it now.

The Three Johns - Atom Drum Bop
That’s a great strategy. There’s so many of them. It’s impossible (for most of us) to listen to every one. 🙂
No probs. Yeah, the bad seeds debut is a decent album.
To be fair, I can’t recall if I’ve ever checked Blue Nile out. If they get through to the semifinals, I’ll give their debut a play. 👍
Great times.
I hope your kids appreciated it, Steve. I used to bombard my kids with The Fall, but the attempted indoctrination failed completely. 😃
Wow, that’s mad. 🙂 Great video, thanks for sharing it, Steve. 👍

It's unclassifiable, and almost certifiable. I still love The Human Chicken, I'd never heard anything like it - it was a B-side but is available on the CD reissue of ADTF. And here:

Cheers, Steve, it’s a brilliant and unusual album. Rural post punk? New wave folk?
Whatever, when I get my list down to 10 albums, it will almost certainly be one of the ten. Love it. The headmaster and the fly is genius. 🙂👍
