Hello from the PNW. Two greyhounds, many movies, and I’m not sure what else.

My 2nd cousin was found, identified via dna testing. While this removes that glimmer of hope of finding him alive after the floods, closure is better than continued unknowns.

NEW: Thad Heartfield needs to find his son, Aidan. Texas Equusearch volunteers came in to help search the river. It was a frustrating mission to bring a family closure after the floods took so much away.

This makes me so angry.
New: Per FEMA evening briefing, additional 204 ppl have been deployed to TX—19 from FEMA + 185 from other agencies including National Search & Rescue Teams, HHS, ASPR, Texas A&M forest service, and law enforcement support. Few (if any) ppl on the ground to help survivors register for assistance.
"Despite Trump officially activating FEMA on Sunday, FEMA has just 86 total staff deployed at this point [to Texas], according to figures shared with staff Monday evening...In the past it would normally be in the several hundreds at this point in the disaster recovery process."

A new paper shows that pediatric deaths in the US are significantly higher than in comparable countries, but what is driving this?

“Premature births, sudden unexpected infant deaths, congenital anomalies for infants; firearms, motor vehicle crashes, substance use, and homicide for ages 1-19”.
Trends in US Children’s Mortality, Chronic Conditions, Obesity, Functional Status, and Symptoms
This study aims to determine how US children’s health has been changing from 2007 to 2023 using multiple data collection methods and a comprehensive set of health indicators.

I have family in the Texas Hill Country. When word of the floods hit the news, I was worried about the region and the people more generally. It wasn’t until today that I understood how very close to home this disaster would hit.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

I saw Looper again last night, and what most struck me was how plausible 2044 Kansas felt, compared to when the movie first came out.

Kelly is still feeling a bit poorly - does anyone else have a greyhound who hacks a lot but otherwise seems fine?

When we watch a movie, I usually try to find someone else posting about it to work from - but I see no footprint here for Rats! Which is a movie that manages to have strong 2007 vibes while also being truly insane.

Pssssst... hey.

I believe in you.

Times could be MUCH harder than this, and if they were, you could get through that, too. There's a spark in you that's inextinguishable. That's what matters, not anything trying to extinguish it.
