What not enough tutorials tells you about game design is how much code you throw away when you're iterating and trying to find the fun. Gutted a core system today in my game that wasn't fun. Hopefully the replacement is closer to the mark.

Anyone have suggestions for the best game design resources on the web? Not necessarily video games specifically - any kind of game design. I'm trying to learn more.

Talarico: “The billionaires own the algorithms and the news networks.

They are selling us conflict right into our bloodstream, and they’re calling it connection.

And I think it’s left people starving for actual community.”

You should only interact with people online that you can verify are real people. Do not engage with anyone else. An entire nation's intelligence service has spent years dedicated to undermining democracy and stability via the internet.

Just discovered a group called Brass Against which covers Rage Against the Machine (and others) with full brass instruments. It's like Ska and RAtM had a baby. An angry, angry baby. Love it.

Does your New Year's Resolution have anything to do with GMing, becoming a game master, or finally taking the leap into learning how?

What if I told you that you could achieve it by early February with New Gamemaster Month?

one of my goals for 2026 is to rely on Big Tech a lot less in my life. A big step towards this has been to buy our own Network Area Storage server (NAS) which cost about $1000 for the device and 16 TB of storage space on a 2 drive RAID. We can store our own images, backups, and recipes!

I shared a joke on twitter about seeing a Bard leveling up in the wild when one of my neighbors was chasing a squirrel wearing nothing but boxers and a guitar on a shoulder strap and I have been sent a screenshot of my words by family and friends dozens of times. Millions maybe saw it?
What was your biggest impact on the internet?

Cringe.
What was your biggest impact on the internet?

Just, more lesbians I guess ?

You are your own worst enemy when it comes to prototyping and designing a vidya game, I am finding. "What if A or B..." oh, now I gotta refactor X, Y, and Z!" Lordy, I am learning a lot on the fly. Fun as hell though.

I've started working on a pipeline to rapidly generate character portraits for my game, the primary art asset I need besides UI icons. Here are a couple I've made so far to learn. The modern tooling for digital characters blows away the HASH: Animation Master stuff I learned back in 1998!

Show up. Be a decent person. Try to be kind, try to be open, be excited about how you can be a part of the cool stuff you discover, and be ready to share your cool stuff too. Because what you offer, to potential friends and peers, in order to last, has to make both of you shine brighter.

I've been hard at work on the holiday break adding new features to The Veiled City and refining existing ones. There is now a constellation of power struggle between the forces in the world, and a tasks/mission system for tutorials and daily/weekly rewards.

The brilliant thing about Cordova's games is that they distribute the cognitive burden of GMing more evenly to the players. This gives them much more story involvement and control. I highly recommend them.
I wish my games got more credit for how easy they are to run.

We have a Christmas tree popup near us every year. It's for charity, and usually by Christmas day, the lot is 90% empty. When I drove by this morning, the lot was full of trees. They were just trying to give the trees away day before yesterday.

If that isn't an economic indicator, then what is?

Thieves of the Tome from @firstpancake.studio is an explosive TTRPG played using real books. You read that right, real books! You will bring a book from your shelf and turn it into a spellbook for another player to cast from.

People warned us our accidental husky would shed. I said, "Pfft. I grew up with dogs. Dogs shedding is no big deal." I was wrong. In defiance of the laws of physics, huskies shed their body weight daily during shedding season. If husky hair was edible, we could solve world hunger with three dogs.
