@marisakabas.bsky.social doing the kind of work the MSM should be doing, while they piggyback on her journalism without giving her credit. Subscribe to her newsletter and see what real reportage is all about.

Shockingly, my Apple music top artist for 2025 was ELO for the second year in a row. Top song: Living Thing (it had an advantage because it was on my faves list twice.) Top album: Time, exc. Apr., when it was Dark Side of the Moon for obvious reasons. Curious if the ELO hyperfixation goes thru 2026.

I think this is my best essay on this topic (maybe my best essay). I'd like you to read it, if you haven't.
It also means (@lollardfish.bsky.social has ably written about this) that you as a parent are forced to concentrate on and narrate your child's difficulties just to get them what they need, which is damaging to your child and your relationship with them.

One of my biggest Jeopardy pet peeves is contestants who say “what is” instead of “who is” for people. I really hate that. (We’re catching up; in Sept right now.)

My Subaru Libero micro mini van. I bought it in Germany and when we moved to the States three years later, I couldn’t bring it because it wasn’t US specs and we were too broke to import it anyway.
QOTD: What car did you own for the shortest period of time? I had this Saab for eight months before it went kaput.

Incompetent is the kind interpretation of this man’s work. Cowardly and partisan is probably more accurate. And he seems to think he’s more intelligent than that paper’s former subscribers.
I think the exec editor of the @nytimes.com continues to misread much of the criticism of his newspaper. For example, many critics are begging the Times to stop putting Trump lies in headlines without facts or context. That's not partisan, it's good journalism.

I'm still boycotting Subway for yelling at my four-year-old because he wanted a baloney kid's sandwich. He's now almost 30. Y'all don't think I can hold a grudge against AI and its pushers for the rest of my life? LOL.

It would be really cool if PBS could show Rick Steves when it's NOT a pledge drive.

Tied with

“That must be such a peaceful job.”
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

I think I'm supposed to be hearing an Italian accent in that Rao's commercial, but it really sounds Spanish to me. I thought Rao's was a Spanish company until I saw their float in the Thanksgiving parade. Am I the only one who hears a Spanish accent?

For Christian: Ave Maria by Stevie Wonder.

For secular: This Christmas by Donny Hathaway.
What is your favorite "Christian" Christmas song and what is your favorite "Secular" Christmas song?

I will probably always adore "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" for Christian.

And "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" for secular.

Sure, they've made an environmentally catastrophic mass hallucination disinformation plagiarism Clippy that will destabilize the world, but also their other goal is to replace human workers entirely and let us humans starve. A boycott of AI is the most important boycott of your entire life.
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."
Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?
