I realize that the faculty are not the actual audience for a slide like this but honestly, I liked it better during Covid times when the administrative guidance to faculty was literally: “Keep Teaching.” Pro-Tip: It’s hard to hold onto credibility in an administrative role and very easy to lose it.

To present this “framework” one can safely assume an administrator is not planning on ever “returning to the faculty.”

Respect and empathy have become so wildly situational. And appreciation is almost no where to be found. When an academic administrator stands in front of a room full of faculty — faculty who kept the university afloat through the Great Recession, Covid-19, & political upheaval not seen in 75 years…

The McNay’s sculpture collection and gardens are quite special (particularly as the museum adapts landscaping to the expanding water restrictions in South Central Texas).

The McNay Art Museum in San Antonio is where I learned about contemporary art in historical context. I was so lucky to grow up with this special place down the street! I stopped by last week and cannot recommend it more: If you are ever in San Antonio — visit!

I missed this yesterday: the AAU has come out against the compact. I am pleasantly surprised. I think it makes it pretty hard for any university to accept the deal now, with a possible exception of Texas. www.aau.edu/newsroom/pre...
We have significant concerns, however, about any compact or policy that could damage or depart from our nations competitive merit base system for research grant funding. That system has been the foundation for science and and innovation for decades. Since World War II that special partnership among the federal government, industry, and research universities has fueled tremendous growth in our economy and educated the next generation of highly skilled American workforce contributed to the health of our people and made our nation more safe and secure.

🫩Bonkers !! The advice/mentoring narrative is so…complicated!!! 😳😬

jclarkcrp.bsky.social
I am so sorry. I appreciate the real pain that was behind this advice but it was so, so misguided. Thank you for breaking the cycle! Let’s keep going!

jclarkcrp.bsky.social
This wasn’t okay in 2005; it is not okay now. My journey has been long. But I have never worn baby blue polo shirts and I put my cards on the table. Passing on your pain is not a sign of power or strength; it is a screaming sign of tragic, deep damage. Don’t do this: as hard it is, lift people up!

When I was untenured female faculty a senior woman in the College (who supervised P&T) advised me to “wear pastels.” She told me to wear pink, baby blue, and aqua and “keep my palms on the table.”

Education and basic research require public funding. There is no way around that. But the model that developed over that last forty years is not the only alternative and we can and should do better. It doesn’t have to be this way.

jclarkcrp.bsky.social
It is complete nonsense to assert that external funding is a measure of research quality. Funding is an input to the research enterprise; it is not a measure of the quality of the output. 🙄 Why is this hard? 🫠

Excellent organizing! P.S. This is what a water bottle “problem” looks like 😬. You’re good!
Too many water bottles!!
