Milky Way and Aurora over Ruataniwha

A smaller aurora over Lake Ruataniwha.
Just giving it a little Glow-Up to make it pretty.

I took advantage of a couple of clear nights at the end of November to photograph the spiral Galaxy NGC 7331 in the constellation of Pegasus. Despite the light pollution over Wolverhampton it’s not turned out too badly using just an infrared cut filter.

Tonight, the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a G3 (STRONG) watch for December 9 and a G1 (minor) watch for December 10 due to a coronal mass ejection (CME) that is directed at Earth. Auroras may be seen further equator ward than usual Monday night.

A G3 (STRONG) geomagnetic storm watch has been issued by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center. This is due to a CME predicted to arrive at Earth around early-midday Dec 9 UT (Monday night).

Auroral displays may be seen across the central U.S. Follow for more updates.

Just now: NOAA SWPC Is forecasting the M8.1 CME to arrive around 5 UT on Dec 9. This is essentially the same arrival time as the NASA M2M model, so it's great these models are converging. Monday night is "the night" for potential auroras at mid-latitudes. Fingers crossed!

Direct hit! Here is a preliminary WSA ENLIL+Cone model of the M8.1 CME from NASA M2M. Earth shock arrival time is calculated to be Dec 9, 4 UT +/- 7 hr (Monday night).

G2-G3 conditions may be possible, but we'll see what the official forecast from NOAA SWPC is. Stay tuned...

The spectacular fireworks of two eruptive M-class flares from AR 4299 today. First, an M1.1 around 1921 UT followed by an M8.1 around 2039 UT. Both flares were near the center of the Earth-facing disk and eruptive. The M8.1 CME looks the most Earth-directed.

#BlueSkyArtShow #Sky #photography Beautiful colors in the night sky. Arkansas rarely gets auroras, so this was a massive treat a few weeks ago.

There are slight possibilities for geomagnetic storming on Dec 7 and Dec 8 according to NOAA SWPC. Please note that the timing of these G1 periods are never 100% accurate and are more like best guesses.

If Virginia Democrats follow through with a new 10-1 congressional map and a couple of other Dem states make small changes, Trump's gambit to rig the 2026 maps will be remembered as an epic blunder.

An Aurora Framed

I planned for this shot to have a nice wee shape, with dark skies across the top. The trouble with Aurora though, they don't listen! So much bigger and more intense than expected!

Here is a spectacular astrophotography target to try with your wide-field refractor this winter.

I took this one using a super portable (quickly set up and run back inside) on a freezing cold night in February.

The windchill here is -4 degrees and I’m waiting for the bus. As I blink through the ice shards blowing into my eyeballs at 30 mph, I think about how glad I am they took the bus shelter down.

At least the unhoused will have cause to reflect on how little they contributed to the economy.
