Our department is hiring a tenure-track line in Organic Chemistry and related fields! We teach and do research with undergraduate students exclusively. For a PUI, we have very good facilities and instrumentation (400 MHz NMR, six mass specs).

There's been a lot of evidence put out there recently that scientists and tech folks should have to take more humanities courses in their education.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

- Get a label maker and 2-3 more rolls of label tape than you think you’ll need

- Set a lab-wide data file naming policy so that you or anyone else in the lab can easily find stuff and match it to someone’s notebook

Almost all of my students are US citizens and I want the very best for them in life and in their STEM careers.

This is not how we achieve that.

Things that make me feel patriotic include: welcoming and including immigrants, freedom of speech, separation of church and state, balance of powers, honest telling of our history, national parks, etc.

Not feeling super patriotic at the moment.

Fundamentally the #Mars announcement NASA is making today boils down to: there could have been some chemical reactions in these ancient rocks that could have been mediated by living organisms. The word "could" is doing a LOT of heavy lifting there. 🧪
