Public health is infrastructure. And every $1 spent on prevention saves up to $5.60 in health costs. So why does Indiana underfund it? We need budgets that reflect care, not crisis.

@gbosslet.bsky.social this while thread is interesting but shout out to Hi-chews

Some things I've learned in my first few weeks:

1) There is a grey market candy swapping racket between janitors, TSA agents, CSRs, and everyone else who has to stand someplace all day at the airport.

Hi-chews, sour candies, and gummy anything are in highest demand.

Me in August: Sure, let's talk about redistricting here. The 2022 CQ Researcher case is a good resource.

People think they’re taking down a rich intellectual sinecure but they’re mostly terrorizing committed public servants who make $58,000 a year after 15 years of experience at a school that has to budget creatively so students can access textbooks.

This new column by @tressiemcphd.bsky.social makes me think about when I recently had to talk to the police for yet another safety plan, I tried to “lighten” the mood by saying that we all knew this wasn’t my first rodeo. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/01/o...
For at least the past 15 years, my colleagues in academia have grappled with angry letters to university officials for doing their jobs. They have weathered campaigns for their firing. They have contended with an internet army obsessed with doxxing them, their parents, their kids. I’ve been contacted by the F.B.I. more than once in my career. Not because I hold any important state secrets or know a biker gang but because one of my colleagues has lived with so much sustained harassment from right-wing “activists” that it has become a matter of federal concern. Watch lists (one of which was constructed by Kirk’s organization) do not distinguish between public intellectuals at wealthy enclaves and hoi polloi who teach popular classes at cash-strapped schools. In either case, an army of trained provocateurs stands ready to destroy their lives to prove their bona fides as conservative activists.

A great episode for Hoosiers, but also for anyone looking for some perspective on challenges of federalism/what doing public health looks like in a red state.

Also a good reminder to blue state me. I just got my vaccines w/o issue. CVS asking anyone coming for their meds if they want shots too

Tune into our latest Hoosier Health Matters BONUS episode, where we break down everything you need to know about who can get vaccinated this season, who should be, and we try to discern why HHS did it this way.

New Article with @mevansphd.bsky.social & J Irizarry in Public Integrity: Public Administration and Sports(Ball): A Social Equity Approach. Part of a special issue by @jamielevdan.bsky.social & B. Thomas. In this paper, I talk sports, which is impressive for me!

www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Abstract
In an environment where LGBTQIA+ people in sports has become a politically charged topic, how can public administration support all people who want to play sports? Based on a survey of over 1,000 LGBTQIA+ individuals on the use of nonprofit services in the United States, this mixed-methods article explores the experiences of LGBTQIA+ people who play sports through a social equity lens. In our study, we find that those who identify as transgender are less likely to play in sports clubs than cisgendered individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community. In qualitative responses, themes of inclusion and respect were discussed, as well as the importance of gender-neutral language and spaces to help support all people. Through this analysis, we discuss recommendations and implications for sports clubs to create a more welcoming and equitable environment for all people.
PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY
Sports are a part of public administration, but rarely has the field explored LGBTQIA+ individuals within sports clubs in the United States. We explore the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals within sports through a social equity lens. Based on this data, we find that access and outcomes for participation in sports is perceived differently for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Transgender people are less likely to engage in sports as compared to cisgendered individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community, which may result from recent anti-trans legislative efforts. Our discussion focused on the need and implications for improvement in program management and environments that could provide a more welcoming and equitable experience for LGBTQIA+ participants.

This is good questioning but we would not be in this position if Cassidy had simply held the line at Kennedy's confirmation. It's unclear how much of this antagonism is real and how much is for show, and for that, Cassidy has no one to blame but himself.

It would be a huge step forward for Democrats and for general clarity in political writing if these terms went away. These came mostly from academic hothouses.

Same here but it's the printed v. Being able to show them on screen the same thing. I'm sure there is - or was- a logic but now it's an administrative burden. I had to print and go back today. I saw the person in front of me turned away for the same reason, and the person after me said "I'm back"

Had a mostly good time at the game today but Fifa and Met Life need to reevaluate their vendor policies. No water easily available (even to buy) at/after the 72nd minute was problematic (to say the least).

Positive: taking public transportation from Princeton to the stadium
#FifaCWC
Dear Fifa and MetLife-

I had the opportunity to attend the Fifa Club World Club this afternoon at MetLife Stadium. I want to say the experience was fantastic- great crowd, some good soccer.

However, at the 70th minute, with a heat advisory (91 degrees/feels like 96), we could not easily access water. We were willing to pay, of course, but all of the vendors we came across by our section were already closed. This policy - or practice, if not official guidance- has the potential to cause great harm. (Also, if you need the capitalist argument, it represents lost profit.)

Please reconsider your policies and practices for the other semi and final (not to mention next year's World Cup.

Thank you.
