Anyone who thinks the invasive species problem is exaggerated, that it's "all just nature", should experience the cemetery that is a native Irish rainforest choked by rhododendron, as so many are.

Invasives are a *human* impact, and one of the top causes of biodiversity loss on Earth.

Pine martens are such gorgeous little animals, and as omnivores perform a great range of vital roles within the forest ecosystems that are their home, acting as predators, scavengers, seed dispersal agents, and more.

Their name in Irish is 'an cat crainn' – the tree cat.

Birds of prey are an essential part of a healthy, balanced eco-system - but they face many challenges, including persecution and habitat loss. That’s why places like Argaty, and the moorland habitats at Tarras Valley Nature Reserve are so vital.

Most of Ireland's uplands are commonage, ie co-owned by local farmers.

The ONLY real income from commonage is via subsidies, almost always for ecosystem-killing sheep. This is why Irish mountains are all empty wastelands, kept that way by your taxes.

Why are we STILL not paying farmers to rewild??

There are 2 very distinct types of shooting:

• Ecologically disastrous, eg declining native species, or releasing masses of pheasants
• Ecologically beneficial, eg invasive species, or if too many deer

Nature *needs* the shooting community, but it also needs a shift to an ecological consciousness.
Scotland’s landscapes are shaped by deer – and no one knows it better than stalkers. They see how deer bring life and when balance is lost. Empowering stalkers to restore that balance is key to tackling Scotland’s climate and nature crises.

A bunch of people from the forestry industry replying to or quoting this post along the lines of, 'Don't believe your own senses, plantations of alien trees are actually great.'

My response?

"It's hard to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it."
We are constantly told by the media and authorities that these are both 'forest'.

One is a complex, diverse native ecosystem, full of life. The other is an industrial monoculture deadzone.

They could not be more different.

Great news for nature🌳 Yesterday MSPs voted to create a law obliging the owners of large landholdings to publish plans on how they will increase biodiversity and adapt to climate breakdown, as part of the new Land Reform Bill.

Heavier floods. Fiercer wildfires. Longer droughts.

The signs of climate breakdown are no longer subtle – and scientists agree: the window for action is closing.

Climate change threatens both people and nature, but it's precisely these two forces that are most equipped to turn the tide.

Fun beaver/fish interaction: When I approached this pond, I startled brown trout preparing to spawn below it (beavs filter sediment & keep downstream substrate clean). The fish dashed to the dam & hid in its base. Beavers created perfect spawning grounds: pristine gravel adjacent to dense cover! 🤯🦫🐟

Imagine this, and places just like it all across Ireland, once again covered in its natural habitat of *wildly* species-rich, spellbinding, rainforests.

By simply making it worth farmers' while to remove their few sheep, we could so easily magic wand them back into existence.
