Another gross example of the degree to which we normalize traffic violence: A child and a vehicle somehow “collide” in a crosswalk outside an elementary school. Slow clap to Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows News, owned by Black Press Media.

Two thoughts: 1. The fact that this is not a huge scandal leading to resignations is evidence of generalized exhaustion and scandal fatigue. 2. Public trust in public institutions is critical to a functioning democracy, and in steep decline, AND THIS IS NOT FUCKING HELPING, PEOPLE.

NPR is receiving some clear feedback.

Imagine if NPR had actually talked to safe streets advocates for this story and learned how the solutions to drivers killing people is not, in fact, victim blaming
You've heard of defensive driving — driving practices to help you stay safe on the road, like reducing your speed in bad weather or signaling before switching lanes. But what about defensive walking and cycling?

As a person who identifies as neurodiverse, I feel deep disgust at Dear Leader’s baseless declaration that acetaminophen causes autism in utero. This lie will cause incalculable harm to children and families.

Bligh has a decent amount of support from the province and feds (more than Sim or Allam at this point), which could help.

But her 6 years being a supporter of Ken Sim, and getting elected under both the NPA and ABC banners, means it’ll be difficult to get support from local left-wing parties.

Rebecca Bligh voted to slash wages for workers, to block rental housing in wealthy neighbourhoods, and to oppose common sense tools to properly fund our schools.

We need a progressive mayor on the ballot to deliver the change Vancouver needs. And we’ll get one. More soon.

Vancouver councillor Rebecca Bligh makes official she will run for mayor next year under a new banner of “Vote Vancouver”.

Bligh was first elected in 2018 with the NPA, left them, joined Sim’s ABC Party and was re-elected, before she was booted from ABC, mostly on divisions over social issues.

Apartments (including rentals and below market homes!) are banned from most of the city's nice side streets.

That sucks!

@lucymaloney.bsky.social's motion to legalize 6 floor apts by parks and bike routes could help change that.

Here's how you can show support:

There are so many good reasons to support this motion and you can do so by signing up to speak in favour of it and/or by writing to the mayor & council asking them to vote in support. Thank you. Here is the link:

The purpose of the motion is to allow more accessible & more affordable housing options in every neighbourhood, on the kind of streets people most want to live on – those that are quieter, safer, and less polluted. (2/3)

Global News laid off 26 journalists in B.C. and Alberta today.

In B.C. the layoffs include virtually all of the online team, along with many others.

The business is increasingly cruel, and the hollowing out of newsrooms providing fair and reliable information continues to suck.

So the next time you see a mattress rotting away in a park understand: 1. It is there because the mattress industry has convinced the Province of British Columbia that dead mattresses are someone else's problem and 2. That someone else is you. (6 of 6)
jamesglave.bsky.social
"Adverse publicity," indeed. Kudos @stefanlabbe.bsky.social for exposing this. It's shameful that these companies will not take ownership over the garbage they create, and equally gross that the province is justifying their free pass with something-something "cost of living." (5 of 6)

Sleep Country's most recent Annual Information Form, covering fiscal year ended Dec 31, 2023, shows net income at a healthy $71.5 million. It is solidly profitable. And look down here here in its "RISKS" section for a clue about why it has successfully fended off disposal regulations. (4 of 6)

Let's look at Sleep Country Canada, which makes its own house brand mattresses plus owns Casper, Endy, Silk & Snow, and a bunch of other sleep brands. The company went private in October 2024, but was publicly traded prior to then, which means we can take a peek at its books. (3 of 6)

The province said govt will reverse a previously promised proposal to regulate new product categories under recycling regs due to “consumer affordability challenges.” This is utterly galling. This industry is MORE than capable of covering the costs of the end of life of its products. (2 of 6)
jamesglave.bsky.social
The Province of BC has caved to the mattress industry by waiving its obligation to deal with the garbage it produces. This pushes the burden of worn-out beds onto local govs and you and me, and will result in more illegal dumping. @stefanlabbe.bsky.social (1 of 6) www.biv.com/news/economy...
