'The British Library...has taken years to recover from a major cyberattack that disrupted its services and restricted access to its collections. The walkout is set to take from 27 October to 9 November, coinciding with the two-year anniversary of the cyberattack.'

It’s really incumbent on anyone with a conscience to simply leave that place. And if everyone did, those accounts would soon relocate to where their audience is. The argument of ‘I’ll go when everyone else goes and not until’ is such a weak one. It’s incredible to me people still feed that monster.

and it's no longer a chronologically synced online public square. it was so effective at bringing people together quickly to help each other - with information and mobilization of voices, resources, or attention. it was intentionally broken to interrupt the good it was capable of doing in the world

I do think this is at the heart of the issue. Our fields prepare us to participate in stable institutional structures but not how to collectively protect those structures from bad faith attacks and neoliberal dismantling.

I take your point but the idea of funneling money, however little, to M*sk led me to abandon the network of interlocutors I had over there. Posting on Bluesky so far feels like a completely futile exercise but at least I can do so without feeling ethically compromised.
jacobius.bsky.social
And who doesnt enjoy shouting into the void that is Bluesky? 🥲
jacobius.bsky.social
There is of course an instrumentalist justification for remaining on Twitter. But it seems (to me a least) ethically unjustifiable to remain on a platform that is run by an avowed fascist.
jacobius.bsky.social
Oh absolutely. That’s why I say ”at the very least”. For many, as you note, that is precisely the appeal..

Academics with young children: I would love your advice. How do you manage to carve out time to read/write/think without being an absent parent? Is the answer just ‘Don’t sleep much’?

I hereby declare war on premature Christmassing.

Any shop caught doing this before 1st December must be shut down and turned into affordable housing.

Choose sanity. Vote Binface.

'One does not wish to dignify this kind of vandalism with a response and you have to wonder whether the Tories will give Badenoch even one election before booting her out.'

Kemi Badenoch’s attack on the arts and humanities isn’t just culturally short-sighted, it’s economically illiterate

That was 2011. Now the Western states vs. failing/facist regimes dichotomy seems far less stable.
jacobius.bsky.social
Based on my year living there, it requires Western expats to have at (the very least) a willingness to stomach a strict racial hierarchy and economy dependent on indentured labor. At the same time, for people escaping failing states/fascist regimes it represented
a degree of freedom and stability.

They're cutting religious studies programs so everyone can study tech, just when the tech world increasingly demands religious studies education to understand it.

Every time I read news from the UK it sounds less and less like the country I know/knew….
danielsohege.bsky.social
Utterly disgusting, but another sign of the continuing emboldening of hate groups.

Labour should be as quick to act against groups like this, who are actually causing harm and breaking the law, as they declare themselves to be against those opposing genocide.

Even on its own terms the idea that an English degree is worthless is so clearly untrue. One of my good friends from English-lit undergrad days is currently on her way to Hollywood to sign terms a movie version of her novel…
