Note: Sammy's Law would apply solely to "Large Social Media Platforms" (i.e. platforms with 100 million+ monthly active users). So platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok would immediately be affected. Bsky and smaller platforms would be unaffected until they cross threshold.

App Store Accountability Act: Main criticisms are the same with any bill that requires age verification: Risk of Data privacy breaches, mass surveillance concerns, and restriction of access to info.

Sammy's Law: Main criticisms are that it 1. Surveillance of minors would increase drastically 2. Would put sensitive data at risk (unvetted 3rd party provider monitoring) 3. Would out closeted teens to potentially abusive parents.

COPPA 2.0: Main criticisms are that 1. Platforms will simply chose to ban people under 17 rather then deal with the opt-in stuff (a criticism of the OG bill). 2. Ironically, end up requiring more data collection (verification of parent-child relationships) 3. Restrict teen's access to info.

SOPA/PIPA are also a well known case of an online surveillance/censorship bills that received a significant amount of backlash, and were not enacted as a result.

backlash from constituents are one way that people can pressure those in power, and has worked before
