My latest piece for @jsource.bsky.social, Beyond the Famine Frame, pulls back the curtain on how editorial decisions, political pressure, and industry gatekeeping have eroded trust — and why the famine narrative isn't the shift in coverage some think it is.
The war on Gaza has exposed a breaking point between young people in Canada and traditional media, writes @imankassam.bsky.social

3/3 Newsrooms that cave lose credibility. Newsrooms that resist get shut out. But journalism isn’t just about staying in the room… It’s about reporting the truth - especially when power tries to rewrite it.
2/3 Language shapes reality. When governments dictate how journalists use it, they’re not just controlling words, they’re controlling the narrative. That’s how “official” truths get manufactured and public discourse gets manipulated.
1/3 Pretty ripe example of how newsrooms get strongarmed into compliance - access in exchange for editorial obedience. The pressure isn’t always this blatant, but the playbook stays the same: withhold access, apply pressure, and force journalists to choose between integrity and staying in the room.

Wanna make competitive sports fair? Ban the wealthy who grew up with private coaches and cryo chambers. Let’s see how fair competition shakes out when everyone’s eating the same cafeteria mystery meat.
What in the holy trinity of white supremacy, evangelical pearl-clutching, fragile masculinity is this? Did the patriarchy take such a devastating L that an executive order had to be drafted out of sheer spite? The way this man crumbles at the thought of fairness is almost impressive.

“a large group of funny, talented trans posters were the earliest adopters of Bluesky and were able to forge the platform into what it is today: funny, frequently horny, and with very strong moderation tools. If you like Bluesky’s vibe right now, thank a trans person,” journalist Katelyn Burns said
