COP30: Only highest possible ambition can cut global damage from accelerating ice loss
Given the heated times we live in, (in all the senses of the word) it was highly unlikely that this year's State of the Cryosphere Report would bring good news about the impacts of climate warming on our frozen regions. Global ice loss is not letting up any time soon. On the contrary. Ten years after the signing of the Paris Agreement, ice and snow loss is accelerating. If anything should convince the delegates attending COP30 in Brazil of the need for ambitious and urgent action, this latest assessment of the state of our frozen regions should. This is not just about ice and snow. As the Report's title says: Ice Loss = Global Damage.

Interesting read. He is not completely writing off the COPs here:
„One reason is these annual events provides a mechanism whereby those nations most vulnerable to climate change can exert some sort of power on much wealthier nations. by joining together to produce a louder collective voice.“
If we're trying to stop the dangerous human interference in the climate, ten the annual Conference of the parties climate negotiations don't work. In important respects they have been designed to not work because they ensure continued use of fossil fuels.

“Science is crystal clear here. Our only chance to recover back to a stable and safe climate is to accelerate the phase-out of fossil-fuels, remove carbon and invest in nature (on land and in the ocean), and do that without trading off between them.”
"Warming is going to exceed 1.5°C. We are heading into “overshoot” within the next few years. The world is going to become more turbulent and more dangerous. So, what comes after failure?" Some thoughts from Johan Rockstrom & me 10 years after Paris Agreement.

It's a powerful feedback loop: more ice shelf melting changes salinities which generates more ocean turbulence, which in turn causes more melting — with major implications for ice shelf stability and global sea level rise. (arrow shows max melt ratio)
