Excellent thread, this.

My understanding is once the aircraft came off the production line in North Buffalo, they were wheeled into the parking lot, and flown in a short hop out to what is now the Buffalo airport on Genesee for delivery prep.

Alternately they were trucked in sub assemblies.

The new St. Paul and the Broken Bones album is really, really, quite good.

It will feature largely in my autumnal rotation…

Spotted in the wild yesterday.

Time to return to a climate controlled cave for the winter months and road-salt season.

Just finished this. An entirely entertaining account of post-war record setting distance flying, and its impact on commercial aviation.

Highly recommend for aviation buffs.

Cochrane was Huntington’s XO at the Guantanamo landing, among other things.

He accompanied Lincoln to Gettysburg for the cemetery commemoration in 1863, IIRC, and didn’t retire until after the Spanish war.

A real grey-beard…

Barbuto provides an excellent description of the challenges facing the U.S. in the relationship between Regular Army, Volunteers, and State Militia, in an era dominated by toxic partisan politics.

It was a mix with few positives to count.

Deleted a post that contained a link to a paywalled article.

I’m sorry.

That was genuinely inconsiderate.

I’ll do better.

Admiral William Sims wasn’t just any retired crank.

He was responsible for the development of modern targeting and gunnery in the U.S. Navy.

He studied foreign navies.

He championed effective training.

He declared the battleship “dead” decades before anyone else.

He knew how to sink ships.
