So particularly if you are new to this and seeing frequent “if you don’t like making [art] don’t be an [artist!]” and thinking “But sometimes I DON’T like it…” and Imposter Syndrome is gathering you close and whispering you’re-nothings in your ear, please push it away.

Now, using an LLM to get past the point where you feel like you’re chiseling the words out of stone tablets located inside your ribcage is still a terrible idea, don’t get me wrong. I just worry that in the haste to condemn LLMs, we’re over-romanticizing the human creative process.

I'd be more willing to engage with conversations about if "yellow paint" is bad for games/gamers if games without it were actually designed worth a damn. TLOU1 is SUCH a disaster of a game for intuitive level design. The new Destiny 2 expansion is a mess. Make better options before complaining.

So, since we have Yet More Discourse going on, I wanna toss out a thing because I keep seeing it come up.

Writing is not always fun, and that’s actually pretty normal.
Same. Frankly, I can’t imagine any situation where using an LLM to generate text would not make writing the book take ten times as long.
In case it doesn't go without saying: I have not used gen AI to create text in any of my books. I have not used Grammarly etc to "clean up" the text. I have not used it to research any of my books, except where it might be built into search engines under the hood (I do not use labelled AI results).

To be clear, I am not trying to demonize testosterone writ large. But. HRT/estrogen/T blockers saved my life. And not just in the literal way, but it made me a better, kinder, more focused person that can interact with the world in the way that I want to and that I believe is good.

I think this is a huge part of it, but also a genuine disdain for intellectualism and the idea that there's something they may not understand. "I was told there's male and female and those are immutable, and now you try to say otherwise and that's too much work and distressing so I must lash out"
I know this is something I circle back to a lot, but it honestly feels, to me, like half the attacks on our trans siblings roots back to "children aren't people." The doctor said "boy," so I get to be the parent of a boy child! Not a girl child! How dare my child want things I don't want?!

Also support your local library and get involved in its collection management processes. Attend board meetings, make sure your library is committed to continuing to host these materials.
Support your local bookstore. They're still selling queer books while big stores are quietly removing us from the shelves.

There are two Barnes & Nobles in my city, and both have been scrubbed of any nonfiction books on queer and trans people. Not sure how the fiction section is doing yet. These are dire times. It's not unrealistic to worry about a return to the Hays Code.

people are tremendously, indescribably bad at identifying their own motivations and beliefs. this is why you can't chase polls. you have to

and bear with me

*do the work of politics by convincing people your ideas are the right ones*

something Dems like Jeffries and Schumer refuse to do.

Gen Z focus group quotes are depressing and make me want to throw myself into a gorge, but the real lesson is that people's political beliefs are not logical or consistent. they change with the wind. they respond to emotional appeals, not policy or platforms.

our goal shouldn't be to "win" these people. fuck these people. but the reality is that a real candidate with real ideas who comes off as a fighter would win most of them anyway because that's what they actually want.

i have a three step plan for dealing with Gen Z republicans

1. Ask Gen Z’ers which party they belong to.

2. Gather everyone who responds “Republican” into one physical location.

Follow to learn step 3

2/2 Nor, when it comes to writing awards, will I nominate or vote to award, a piece of work partially or wholly written by LLM. Awards are for writers who make the effort, not those who offload the difficult aspects of creation to a program mining the work of others. Do the fucking work, people.

1/2 Apropos of nothing in particular, I guarantee I will never write a piece of fiction with the "help" of a large language model because a) I spent too many years developing skills to just fuck off now, b) I don't plagiarize other authors, whether intentionally or by way of statistical matches.

*Loved* Wake Up Dead Man, only have two small complaints.

1. I fucking HATE super HD realism filming where it looks like you're "really there", it freaks me out, I like my movies feeling framed/stilted/made. Only one or two scenes did this but it was off-putting every time.

Babel by @rfkuang.bsky.social is a book about many things, but this especially. It also got me to think of librarianship as an act of translation as well.
Taking in the context, verse, aesthetics, poetry, and aura of a text to recreate it in a different language is translation, an act of taking the core "soul" of a thing and opening it up access through a different tunnel.

Word for word "translation" is just using a mirror, and is similarly flat.

PSA: If you’re gifting someone a board game…

- Open it, punch the tokens, make sure all the components are there
- Sleeve the cards and laminate the player aids
- Read through the rules, do a solo play, print out the FAQ and errata
- Give them a Dunkin gift card and keep the game
