In April 2024, Spotify implemented a new scheme: songs with less than 1k streams per year would no longer receive royalties.

The data for 2025 was just released via Luminate, and 88% of songs have been demonetized.

Read it again: 88% of songs on Spotify have been demonetized.

I missed out on this album last year (and have never taken the time to listen to These New Puritans before) but this would’ve definitely been on my end of year list if I had:

Finished ‘Chasing the Dark' by Ben Machell - a fascinating biography of the life of rationalist and sceptic Tony Cornell of the Society for Psychical Research. He was as much a social worker, sensitive to the lives of the people he investigated. Utterly fascinating!

After reading Louie Mantia's blog post "And Stay Out", some of my thoughts about Alan Dye leaving Apple, Jony Ive's influence on Apple's interface and hardware design before Dye, and the general lack of playfulness in everything Apple makes these days. karbonbased.io/posts/2025/12/...

My favorite advice for blogging remains that you should hit publish while you are still actively unhappy with what you have written, because the only alternative is a huge folder full of drafts and never publishing anything at all

Watched this again last night. Such a timeless TV adaptation, so well cast.
I think The Signalman (1976) remains an immortal ghost story (for Christmas) because every second of its chilling dreaminess is in service of a resonant ache of loneliness. We have, at one point of another, all felt this helplessly alone and fraying at the edges with an eerie drone.

It seems that in trying to work out why descriptions weren’t showing up, I’ve messed up my whole podcast feed.

It’s hand rolled, and maybe it’s time to to use some sort of service?

Just in the last week, my Mastodon posts have been reposted to Bluesky (other than the manual cross posting I do), presumably by some service I once signed up for? I've unfollowed bridgyfed, so it's not that 🤷
