i sit in my mom’s bed and listen to her talk, i debug my dad’s python jupyter notebook errors and he explains AI to me at dinner. it’s difficult, it’s very difficult but it’s worth it for me. it wasn’t easy to get to this point either. all relationships are difficult.
Many young people are going "no contact" with their parents. Is it a much-needed corrective, or a worrisome change in family relations?https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/wKHn3K

"AI can generate code in minutes - so why does shipping software still take forever?"

YES

It's the right question to ask

When I see LLMs pitched as a guaranteed productivity tool for software engineering, the is the counterweight I keep trying to get people to seriously engage with and not handwave away is the future cost, and “oh everything tech gets cheaper” isn’t an answer. Services don’t and LLMs are a service.

This is something that should be glaringly obvious to any coder who pushes LLMs as key. How do you make LLMs better coders? Lots of tests for it to run, lots of docs. That means it's doing a change->run->change->run approach. Over and over. For any single prompt. bsky.app/profile/prie...
Sipple has a great thread here echoing my thoughts.

But I’ll argue it’s even worse than “computer costs won’t go down appreciably.”

All those “reasoning” models being rolled out means that compute dramatically increases as models become more and more complex.

Compute consumption goes ever upward.
