“Individuals on the ground sent a message that reached us Monday morning that 1,200 were dead,” Nathaniel Raymond, the lab’s executive director, said. “By that evening, they said 10,000. By Tuesday, we couldn’t reach them anymore. We assume our ground contacts are dead.”

You're welcome. It's unfortunately not easy to decrease temperature in existing grids as all substations must be changed...

The US also has fascinating development in #ThermalEnergyNetworks (TEN) which might be called 5th generation district heating in Europe.

Thermal Energy Networks
buildingdecarb.org
FT correctly states:
"Unlike European water-based systems, most US energy networks use steam, and cities such as Boston have “steam lines” running across them that deliver heat to buildings"
but fails to explain why subsequent generations of #DistrictHeating apply significantly lower temperatures.
While I welcome the roll out of #heatPumps, using steam networks is very inefficient.
First generation #DistrictHeating used steam, but lower temperatures exhibit less heat loss, higher coefficient of performance (COP) for heat pumps and higher yield for combined heat & power (CHP) plants.

Illinois will becoming the 5th state to eliminate local parking requirements for new development projects near transit, after:
—California (assembly bill 2097, 2022)
—Colorado (house bill 24–1304, 2024)
—Oregon (Land Conservation and Development Commission, 2022)
—Washington (house bill 1491, 2025)
Illinois will effectively eliminate parking minimum requirements in ~all of Chicago and much of its suburbs thanks to the transit funding bill that passed last night.
Also contains parking reform! This is a preliminary map of Chicagoland based on the People Over Parking Act provision.

It would also apply downstate though!

The German mind cannot comprehend this.

In Denmark, 150,000 petrol cars and 250,000 diesel cars have disappeared from the roads, while 475,000 EVs and 106,000 PHEVs have been added. By early 2026, there will be more EVs than diesel cars in Denmark.

HOT RESEARCH NEWS!

Motonormativity ("car brain") is a bias that stops people making rational judgements about driving en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motonor...

Our new study shows where this bias comes from AND how it makes people think they're odd for supporting changes to the transport system 🧵

Forcing developers to include a minimum amount of parking can add tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to the cost of a project.

This is one of the reasons why repealing parking mandates is part of the 6 strategies for becoming a Housing-Ready City.

When I worked in WaPo Opinions in 2017-2018, senior editors specifically told junior editors not to factcheck Marc Thiessen and other MAGA columnists, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to publish anything by them at all, and “we need them for intellectual diversity.”
It’s very telling that opening your publication to MAGA “thought” requires a massive downgrade in quality control.

The city of Würzburg was a transport hub for Nazi Germany deportations 1941 - 1944.

A sad chapter in history for this beautiful city, but it must not be forgotten.

Today there is a memorial at the railway station.

To be clear, the US govt already shoulders the vast majority of the risk of nuclear power. The Price-Anderson Act of 1957 - which civil developers including Bechtel lobbied to create! - makes the federal government responsible for most liability in case of a nuclear disaster. Now they want more...
I've argued nuclear is not viable for economic reasons. Don't believe me, how about an industry exec?

“The advice we’ve been giving the government is . . . there is overrun risk, and no one company can take it all because they’d be betting their company,” he said in an interview.
