Here's a preview of my next Gaia DR4 article scheduled for January. What could Gaia DR4 tell us about the inner galaxy?

The first image is figure 8 from Kwee 1954, which may be the first map ever published for the inner galaxy.(ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1954BAN....)

Uses old galactic longitude.

Hubble images show the formation of two enormous dust clouds caused by collisions between kilometre-sized celestial bodies around the star Fomalhaut. The dust clouds can easily be confused with real planets – an important clue for future observation missions 🔭

Many English words stem from Latin.

But did you know there are Latin words that ended up in English two times - in two different forms? These are called doublets.

Over the next days, you'll see doublets in French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan, Galician, Dutch, and English again.

Very interesting to see this. Cartography is not just about science but about shared usage. Looking forward to seeing if any of the "new" OB associations in this paper get used by other researchers.
A new census of OB associations with Gaia!

In this study, we took advantage of my OB stars map to find new OB associations within 1 kpc. The goal was to create a useful reference catalogue for this era, and to trace the star formation and structure of the local Milky Way.

Really interesting analysis here on how claims get amplified by our current media environment (and a rebuttal of sorts to those who argue that Avi Loeb's alien spacecraft hype is good because any science engagement is good engagement):

The big background is a wide-field deep exposure from ground-based amateur telescopes. The blue inset is a Hubble Space Telescope close-up of the inner coma. Same comet, two very different zoom levels and physical scales.

The word ‘law’ is connected with ‘legal’, but etymologically they’re entirely unrelated.

‘Law’ is related to the verbs ‘to lie’ and ‘to lay’. It comes from a Germanic word meaning “things that are laid out”.

‘Legal’ is related to ‘loyal’. Both derive from Latin ‘lēx’ (law).

I borrowed and edited a reading/writing/discussion assignment from @jillianscudder.com for my #Astro101 class on claims of 3I/ATLAS being alien tech... and it went WELL! 🔭🎢

A few years ago when I tried this, it flopped. All the news media was still too deferential to the "Harvard astronomer" (1/n)

What’s the most succesful Germanic colour word? It’s the dullest of them all.

The Germanic word *grīs (grey) was borrowed into Romance, becoming ‘gris’ (French, Spanish etc.) and ‘grigio’ (Italian).

English ‘grey/gray’ has a different origin though: it’s related to German ‘grau’.
