And for an update on our senior yokozuna's shopping.
He found a leather bag that he thought "was cute."
The Yokozuna usually has people make way for him, but on this day he lined up at the checkout register alongside regular. citizens. He was a bit of a bother, too, bc he wanted to pay in cash.

The Royal Albert Hall in London has been transformed into a "temple of sumo" as it hosts the Grand Sumo Tournament for the first time since 1991.

What's on your minds?

As is seasonally appropriate, I've been thinking about death.

B/c I can't help myself I've also been thinking about Christianity's fucked up relationship to death, and the toxic dynamics of hardline faith.

I don’t think the lack of curiosity from the Inca and the Aztec is what led to the collapse of their societies…

"Sapiens" is so normal for the first 70,000 years of human history but then goes absolutely buckwild as soon as it gets to colonialism
Had the Aztecs and Incas shown a bit more interest in the world surrounding them - and had they known what the Spaniards had done to their neighbours - they might have resisted the Spanish conquest more keenly and successfully.

Yeah and used almost every part of them. They did not, however, nearly hunt them to extinction. Which was, in part, a way to starve indigenous people out of existence. Get fucked, Ted.

🌿THE 7 FLOWERS OF AUTUMN🥣

Mirroring the '7 Herbs of Spring' (七草の節句), consumed for good health and luck in January, come the '7 Flowers of Autumn', known as 'Aki-no-Nanakusa' (秋の七草/秋の七種).

These plants are mostly a feast for the eyes and not the belly.
#Japan #Kyoto #秋の七草
Sweets inspired by Japanese bellflowers. A selection of dried sweets for teatime... red dragonflies and bush clover symbolise the coming of autumn. The last is in the shape of a 'Genji Window' (itself inspired by Murasaki Shikibu's visit to Ishiyama-dera). An unusual sweet that symbolises the blustery weather that typically arrives with autumn. A grass is depicted almost flat, as if it has been pushed down by the wind. Another sweet inspired by Japanese bellflowers. The flower is branded onto the delicately purple gyuhi (a softer version of mochi) which surrounds a white bean paste interior.

I know I'm technically a day late in posting this now, but for Indigenous People's Day I recommend everyone read "The Indian Card: Who Gets to Be Native in America" by Carrie Lowry Schuettpelz. Absolute eye-opener on things like blood quantum, tribal registry, belonging, etc.

#IndigenousPeoplesDay
The cover for "The Indian Card: Who Gets to be Native in America" by Carrie Lowry Schuettpelz. The background is a faded, old historical record of some identity document, with a bright central graphic over it that looks like a lightly abstract mix between a flower motif and a burning flame.

We mourn the passing of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a fearless Black trans elder who fought for liberation, dignity, and justice. From Stonewall to decades of advocacy, she taught us to resist, to love fiercely, and to care radically. Her spirit lives on in every fight for collective freedom.
We mourn the passing of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a fearless Black transgender elder whose life embodied the struggle for liberation, dignity, and justice. From the Stonewall uprising to her decades of advocacy for incarcerated trans women and communities of color, Miss Major taught generations to resist oppression and love each other fiercely in the face of state violence. Her legacy is one of radical care and defiant joy, a reminder that true freedom means leaving no one behind. May her spirit continue to guide us as we fight for the world she envisioned.

Rest in power, Miss Major. Your legacy and work will live on.

Bonus points if you kind of fell victim to this dichotomy as a kid or teenager and either bought into it whole heartedly or felt constricted by it.

Read whatever the fuck you want. Gender divides in what people read are bullshit.
heatherjochens.bsky.social
There is an unspoken divvying up of classic literature by gender that happens and it seems like it’s more about protecting men from reading literature written by or about women.

This gives literature written by and about men an air of prestige and women an air of frivolity.

When I get back, if the car’s okay, I’ll give you another cookie.” “If the car’s gone,” “I’ll give you another cookie anyway” “because I love you.”

At a time when sacrificing one’s life for the nation was considered a duty, Moulin Rouge Shinjuku star Ashita Matsuko told soldiers she prayed for their safe return.

I mean… they always have been. This even goes back to their bluster about Obamacare and how they want to abolish it. Yet every single time there is something to do with healthcare, they literally have nothing policy wise to take its place.

It’s because they don’t want there to be public options.

New in PN: Republicans are totally full of it on healthcare.

It becomes more obvious every time they talk about it. And it's a big reason the shutdown is turning out to be such a disaster for them.
