Atelier Ryza: ATB! Rage timers! Ryza being a breakout hit is no accident; this is a real ass JRPG with a touching coming of age story. A huge leap! The alchemy was more on rails than other games, but by endgame I was gardening high level ingredients & grinding gems to boost weapons like it was FFXI.

Fun combat! This series desperately needed a combat refresh, and the ATB elements make Ryza feel lightyears more modern than the traditional Dragon Quest style battles of past games. I still miss more item-specific animations from Dusk tho...

The game world is broken into smaller areas like traditional Atelier, but feature some breathtaking vistas and even a few little secrets. It's not exactly labyrinthine, but satisfying large. The scale of the world matches the scale of the story, which while it leans slightly "avert the apocalypse"y still manages to be a size appropriate to older teens on the cusp of adulthood, their world expanding outward for the first time.

The alchemy system was fine, but not as open or customizable as Lulua. It's all on rails and more about rare ingredient roadblocks than it is about creative problem solving. Once you start crafting items with "elemental spread" it does get pretty exciting, however. I can see the seeds of Yumia's alchemy in this system.

Massive graphical improvements, modernized battle system, all of the improvements in Ryza pale in comparison to its strongest asset: the coming of age story. Ryza and her male friends are a trio akin to the FFXV boys, playfully picking on each other and just giving the sense of a tight-knit group with deep friend lore. Klaudia works perfectly as a disruption to their dynamic, giving Ryza an outlet for her repressed femininity. I really appreciated that the core theme wasn't the old "rely on your friends and you can do anything!" like literally every other Atelier game, and instead focused on the bittersweet reality of how people change as they grow up, and how those magical summers inevitably always come to an end...
