An important message to the people of New York City.

Same -- came to the comments to chime in about devil's advocates. All the time, someone says "Just playing devil's advocate..." and says just awful stuff. My response so far has been to say: "Why does the devil need more advocates?"
They sure did!! So much so that the newest ChatGPT-5 scores, wait a minute... WORSE than GPT-4o on a test of how it responds to harmful prompts. @theguardian.com played it well on their website, putting these two stories right next to each other: www.theguardian.com/technology/2...
For those with the delusional magical thinking of "Here's how we can make AI datacenters more energy efficient -- we'll just power them with small nuclear reactors!" 7 reasons why nuclear power is useless, being more expensive, more dangerous, and more environmentally ruinous than renewables.

"On Wednesday, Mr. Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, rode the full route of the M57, a crosstown bus that traverses Midtown Manhattan and is one of the city’s slowest, to remind New Yorkers that he wanted to speed up their commutes."

I'm on the slowest bus line in the city with the slowest buses in the nation to talk to New Yorkers about what it would mean for their lives if we made them fast and free.

We can’t out-Republican Republicans, nor should we want to.

Democrats need to say what they believe — and actually believe in something.

Oh this is a *deep* nerd cut.... My fingers followed muscle memory to type out gcc --version, because I chuckled and then was like "wait, what version *do* I have..." And I'm not on Linux. This is kind of like those recurring dreams where you have to go back to high school to finish a math exam.

Finally! 🤩 Our position piece: Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia:
doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

We unpick the tech industry’s marketing, hype, & harm; and we argue for safeguarding higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, & scientific integrity.
1/n
Abstract: Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or
even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in
the 21st with social media. For these collective blunders, we now regret our involvement or
apathy as scientists, and society struggles to put the genie back in the bottle. Currently, we
are similarly entangled with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. For example, software updates are rolled out seamlessly and non-consensually, Microsoft Office is bundled with chatbots, and we, our students, and our employers have had no say, as it is not
considered a valid position to reject AI technologies in our teaching and research. This
is why in June 2025, we co-authored an Open Letter calling on our employers to reverse
and rethink their stance on uncritically adopting AI technologies. In this position piece,
we expound on why universities must take their role seriously toa) counter the technology
industry’s marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. We include pointers to
relevant work to further inform our colleagues. Figure 1. A cartoon set theoretic view on various terms (see Table 1) used when discussing the superset AI
(black outline, hatched background): LLMs are in orange; ANNs are in magenta; generative models are
in blue; and finally, chatbots are in green. Where these intersect, the colours reflect that, e.g. generative adversarial network (GAN) and Boltzmann machine (BM) models are in the purple subset because they are
both generative and ANNs. In the case of proprietary closed source models, e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and
Apple’s Siri, we cannot verify their implementation and so academics can only make educated guesses (cf.
Dingemanse 2025). Undefined terms used above: BERT (Devlin et al. 2019); AlexNet (Krizhevsky et al.
2017); A.L.I.C.E. (Wallace 2009); ELIZA (Weizenbaum 1966); Jabberwacky (Twist 2003); linear discriminant analysis (LDA); quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA). Table 1. Below some of the typical terminological disarray is untangled. Importantly, none of these terms
are orthogonal nor do they exclusively pick out the types of products we may wish to critique or proscribe. Protecting the Ecosystem of Human Knowledge: Five Principles

Just got a query from someone I don't know asking to collaborate with me, based on a fake paper, the details of which I'm guessing were extruded from some LLM or other.

Worth reading on civility, which quite often is a vice masquerading as a virtue. The Dems' reflexive attachment to civility ("when they go low we go high") is one of their major problems. One-sided civility is debilitating. 1/ www.nytimes.com/2025/09/24/o...

Was it the X3000 or the X4000 series? A good way to tell is if the black hole generates on the outside versus the inside of the reactor fabric casing. Also, are they throwing in the cooling stack for free? If so, they're probably going to charge you a monthly subscription for the water filter.
