You'd have to be a “scientific publisher.” You'd make better profits than Apple and could benefit twice from public funds, from research and from libraries, which would then have to buy back the results in book form. Simply awesome.
We wrote the Strain on scientific publishing to highlight the problems of time & trust. With a fantastic group of co-authors, we present The Drain of Scientific Publishing:

Christmas came early… Lab sticker restock!

Featuring some lab staples: classic lab logos, taxidermied leopard… and some new glow in the dark #Pyrodinium (cartoon designed by one of my PhD students).

Faculty plan out our grant writing MONTHS if not YEARS in advance - having programs suddenly disappear like this is utterly demoralizing and completely destructive for everyone’s productivity (including students!)
The NSF Bio Anthro Program DDRIG, Cultural Anthrpology DDRIG, and Archaeology DDRIG have all been archived (as of yesterday afternoon). Please speak with your grad students and plan accordingly. To say I am angry and depressed about this is an understatement.

Hey #microbialsky - anyone looking for a good PhD student this cycle? Ugrad from my lab is looking but no luck with the PIs she has contacted (no funding, no response). She worked in my lab for 1.5 years, now is a research tech at the FWC research institute. Excellent at the bench & super smart!

mourn the collective loss of genius of folks who were actively discouraged or disadvantaged from a career in science because of the same person(s)

I write because I love writing. I love writing even when I'm struggling with a writing problem that is killing me. Finding a way through that problem is both intensely rewarding and also helps me become a better writer. There is no reason for me to ever outsource that.
there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

The GRFP announcement from NSF cuts out an entire cohort of 2nd year students from consideration, without warning. This is so deeply unfair that it warrants a formal protest from the scientific community. If someone wants to work with me to craft an open letter and solicit signatures, LMK.
New: After a long wait, the GRFP solicitation is live! Deadlines have been extended to early November, so applicants have a bit over a month to submit. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

God this makes me want to cry. Increasing enrollment while cutting staff and placing blame on a staff increase and staff: student ratio shows a fundamental misunderstanding of his higher ed works.

SUNY has implemented *several* unfunded mandates across campuses in the last few years.
